A women’s and girls’ safe space (WGSS) is an intervention that GBV programme actors in humanitarian programming, have used for decades as an entry point for women and girls to report protection concerns, express their needs, receive services, engage in empowerment activities and connect with the community. For over 25 years, UNFPA has promoted Women’s and Girls Safe Spaces (WGSS) where millions of women, girls and GBV survivors could be free from harm; access care, services and information; and gain skills empowering them to make choices to advance their own safety and well-being. From supporting approximately 400 Women’s and Girls’ Safe Spaces (WGSS) in 2015, UNFPA supported over a thousand in 2022. The establishment of and services offered in WGSS has taken different forms in different contexts, based on Country Offices (COs) capacities, and perceived needs, gaps, opportunities and resources. UNFPA is committed to sustain Women’s and Girls’ Safe Spaces (WGSS) as a core protection, empowerment, and gender-transformative intervention. UNFPA has also made a clear commitment in the Call to Action on Protection from Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies, to invest in gender-transformative work in WGSS.Services and activities offered in the Women and Girls Safe Spaces (WGSS) vary depending on context, women’s and girls’ preferences, the safe space modality (static, mobile, virtual). Although specific WGSS interventions may include different services and activities, all should work towards the five standard objectives as articulated in the Inter-Agency GBViE Minimum Standards and the Women and Girls Safe Spaces: A Toolkit for Advancing Women’s and Girls’ Empowerment in Humanitarian Settings (IRC and IMC, 2020).Job Purpose:The intern will support the GBV team in the Program Support Unit (PSU) at the Humanitarian Response Division (HRD) in Geneva.The focus will be on supporting the creation of UNFPA guidance documents and elearning products about the Women and Girls Safe Spaces.You Would be Responsible For:Team Support Functions:

  • Draft and distribute minutes for GBV team meetings and other key internal/external meetings.
  • Maintain and organize the team’s shared folder, ensuring files are up-to-date and accessible.
  • Regularly update and manage the GBV team’s contact list.
  • Assist with the translation and graphic design of team documents and reports.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support for GBV webinars, including scheduling, invitations, and materials preparation.
  • Assist in knowledge management activities, including organizing resources and maintaining relevant databases.
  • Manage and update the GBV-related digital storage spaces, ensuring files and folders are well-organized for easy access.
  • Provide support for PSU online training sessions and webinars:
  • Send invitations and manage participant communication.
  • Brief participants on using online platforms and troubleshoot any technical issues.
  • Assist in generating webinar reports and documenting key outcomes.
  • Offer general support for the GBV team, Program Support Unit (PSU), GBViE Specialist, and Head of PSU on various tasks as needed.

Project Proposals:

  • Assist with reviewing and revising project reports for accuracy, clarity, and completeness.
  • Regularly update the tracking table for project proposals, ensuring all information is current and properly organized.

GBV Case Management E-Learning:

  • Support the alignment of GBV-related e-learning tools across multiple languages, including translation coordination, material organization, proofreading, and content updates.
  • Monitor and verify updates to the GBV Case Management (CM) E-Learning course if needed.
  • Track participant attendance for the GBV CM e-learning course and compile quarterly reports summarizing trends and engagement.

One-Stop Centers and Women and Girls Safe Spaces:

  • Assist with the drafting, review, and graphic design of the One-Stop Centers Mapping and Guidance Note.
  • Support the Learning Coordinator and the GBV Specialist to create an eLearning on Women and Girls Safe Spaces: draft the content, create quiz and test to be included in the learning, support the revision of materials.

GBVIMS (Gender-Based Violence Information Management System):

  • Provide support to the GBVIMS Coordinator as requested, including tasks such as minute-taking and document preparation.
  • Regularly check the GBVIMS email and coordinate responses
  • Maintain the GBVIMS website and update content regularly.

Your Education

  • It is required to be currently enrolled in the final year of a bachelor programme, an advanced degree programme or recently graduated (about 6 months), in Social Science, Gender, Public Health, International Cooperation, Human Rights or other related subjects.

Your Experience

  • Fluent English
  • Fluent in one of the following official UN languages: French, Arabic or Spanish is an important advantage.
  • Previous experience in the area of Gender or Gender-based Violence is an asset, particularly when related to humanitarian or development settings
  • Previous experience in organizing webinars and online events and related troubleshooting and use of tools
  • Excellent use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Points, Google Docs and preferably good use of graphic design softwares (i.e. Canva or other).

  • IT skills, including setting up websites, zoom meetings etc, and social media skills are an asset

At the end of the 6-month assignment a mid-year report will summarize the webinars and the products supported and or organized by the GBV team on PSU.Learning Elements:Upon completion of the assignment, the Intern should be able to: * Increased understanding of the UNFPA programming in humanitarian settings though interaction with members of the Humanitarian Office, specifically the response and technical support unit, of UNFPA

  • Understand the UNFPA mandate, especially UNFPA role and responsibilities in humanitarian settings
  • Learn UN technical language, working procedures, and coordination mechanisms
  • Networking with UNFPA staff members as part of the internship
  • Work as a team member in a multicultural setting

Financial Aspects:Interns receive a stipend in line with UNFPA policy.For an internship in Geneva, a stipend of 923 CHF/months applies.The costs associated with an intern’s participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements.The applicant must have its own laptop.In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship.
