Details:Mission and objectives:The Office of the Special Adviser on Africa is responsible for assisting the Secretary-General in coordinating, integrating and aligning United Nations action on the interlinkages between peace, security, human rights and development in Africa, enhancing international support for Africa’s development and security and facilitating intergovernmental deliberations on Africa at the global level, in particular those relating to the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), which was recently transformed into the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD.Context:This assignment is part of OSAA’s mission to promote a new narrative on Africa’s development priorities and advocate for the continent’s interests in global fora. In this context, speeches and remarks by OSAA’s senior leadership play a critical role in shaping international discourse on Africa’s economic, political, and social issues.
The online volunteers will help translate these speeches and remarks into accessible, actionable, and professional documents that support OSAA’s advocacy efforts. By contributing to this work, volunteers gain exposure to the workings of the United Nations, with a specific focus on Africa’s strategic development agenda.
For more information about OSAA’s strategic priorities, visit the OSAA webpage.Task type:Writing and EditingTask description:The United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (UN OSAA) is seeking three motivated and detail-oriented online volunteers to assist in the preparation of high-quality policy-style documents based on the speeches and remarks of OSAA’s senior leadership. Volunteers will:
1. Collect and Format Materials: Gather speeches and remarks (15 to 25 documents) and format them into consolidated documents (5-10) following a consistent and professional style, tailored for policy and public dissemination. Guidance on this process will be provided.
2. Support Refinement and Revision: Collaborate on revising and refining the content for clarity, coherence, and alignment with OSAA’s strategic agenda.
3. Conduct Desk Research: Provide additional background research and reference materials as needed to enrich the documents with evidence-based insights and reinforce key points.
Volunteers will work closely with OSAA staff, engaging via email and virtual platforms. Deliverables will be reviewed in regular check-ins, with clear deadlines and opportunities for feedback.Requirements:

  • Education: Current students or graduates in economics, development studies, political science, history, law, or other relevant areas with a strong focus on Africa.
  • Research and Writing Skills: Proven ability to synthesize information, edit content, and prepare professional policy-style documents. Experience working with speeches, research briefs, or similar content is desirable.
  • Knowledge of African Development Issues: Familiarity with the economic, political, and social challenges and opportunities facing Africa is an asset.
  • Language Proficiency: Exceptional command of written and spoken English is required. Proficiency in languages such as French, Arabic, Portuguese, and Kiswahili would be an asset.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and familiarity with online collaboration tools (e.g., Microsoft Teams and SharePoint).
  • Data Literacy: Familiarity and basic knowledge of data analysis, including creating graphs and infographics, would be an asset.
