Duties and Responsibilities
Background The Arab region is at the cusp of a demographic transition that heralds the beginning of population ageing. The number of older persons is expected to increase from 32 million today to more than 100 million in 2050. Recent research has highlighted the extreme vulnerability of older persons and their risk of being left behind. This very fast transition and the dire socio-economic situation of older persons require Arab governments to intensify their efforts to adopt cohesive policies that ensure the dignity for older persons today and in the near future. Against this background, ESCWA has been leading work in the area of ageing in the Arab region through: 1. Addressing the knowledge gap: ESCWA, is developing a series of knowledge products on population and ageing 2. Facilitating regional dialogue: To facilitate regional dialogue, ESCWA, in partnership with other UN agencies organizes periodic regional meeting on population and ageing issues. 3. Providing technical support to member States: ESCWA is providing technical assistance to several Member States to develop their population related policies. Assistance is currently provided to Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Yemen, and Kuwait. Duties and Responsibilities The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks: Technical support to Member States • Carry out tasks as requested by project staff to ensure support for Member States, such as drafting ageing policies, conducting desk research and drafting research papers, and coordinating with national consultants. Knowledge products • Support the development of knowledge products relevant to Member States. Regional Dialogue • Support the team in organizing regional events that bring Member States together. Additional Tasks • Carry out tasks as requested by project staff to ensure effective and timely delivery of all ageing and population project activities. Supervision The Consultant will be working under the direct supervision of the project coordinator of the population and ageing projected, and/or delegated staff members.
Qualifications/special skills
A Bachelor degree in demography, social development, political science, or a related field. A Masters degree is desirable. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. At least 5 years of relevant experience and knowledge of ageing and population issues in the Arab region is required . Knowledge of key ageing and population issues in the Arab region, and experience in drafting ageing policies is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in Arabic and English is required and fluency in French is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
