Our Chalk River location is looking for a R&D Technical Officer to support our Materials Science Branch. Can you see yourself in a role where you will be working as part of a well-established team of professionals and technologists, supporting the development of joining and assembly methods for fuel, fuel assemblies, and other components for both current and advanced reactors?   • Performing assessment of assemblies, such as helium leak testing, metallurgical examination, or mechanical testing.
  • Performing dimensional measurements on components with a variety of techniques (optical extensometry, laser, density measurements, etc.).
  • Performing basic data analysis and document the results in reports.
  • Ensuring that the work is conducted to the appropriate Quality Assurance standards.
  • Ensuring the safe operation of laboratories.
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager.

What we are looking for:

  • Education
  • Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology in a field relevant to the position, such as Welding or Mechanical Technology or equivalent formal education. OR
  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent and normally has more then three (3) years pertinent experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.
  • Experience
  • Experience with evaluation of physical and mechanical properties of metals/alloys through such techniques as metallography, mechanical testing, corrosion performance, etc. is an asset.
  • Experience with high vacuum systems, high temperatures, and gas handling is an asset.
  • Hands-on experience performing experiments is desirable.
  • Experience in laboratory practices and techniques, record-keeping, and organization skills.
  • Experience with machining, welding, metal forming or casting is an asset.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • General background and knowledge in materials science or metallurgy is preferred.
  • Proficiency in laboratory practices and techniques, record-keeping and organization skills.
  • Strong computer skills (including Word and Excel). Having a working knowledge of CAD is desirable.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Ability to maintain awareness of surroundings and adopt safe lab practices.
  • An aptitude in learning new skills, multitasking, meeting deadlines, and achieving objectives and goals
  • Knowledge of or experience with data acquisition systems and processing of scientific data.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to quality assurance
  • Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”

Working Conditions :

  • Expected to work with hands in a laboratory setting.
  • Work in moderate radiation hazard environments where personal protective equipment is required (Radioisotope Laboratories, RFFL, Universal and FMC Hot Cells). This work will require standing while concentrating on the task at hand for extended periods of time.
