The Urgent and Emergency Care team, UHND comprises of ED, SDEC and AMU. There will also be consideration for Temporary Additional PAs TAPAsMain duties of the jobThe main duties of the advertised post will be as follows:To provide Emergency Medicine services in University Hospital North Durham. The post holder will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical service together with consultant colleagues. The Consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge. The Consultant will be responsible in conjunction with colleagues for planning future developments of these services. Specific clinical areas include:Supervision of and assistance to junior and middle grade medical staff and Emergency Nurse PractitionersTo act as Team Leader in the resuscitation of seriously traumatised patients and those with critical illness.To conduct review clinicsTo provide a Consultant presence daily in line with job planGive advice over the telephone or attend the department as required when on call on a one in 8 basis.Participate in the senior doctor rota performing clinical duties and acting as medical co-ordinator.Assist in the smooth integration of the Emergency Department and Urgent Care services.About usIf you are being interviewed you must accept an interview slot in the system to continue, even if you have arranged with the managerYou must be able to produce ALL certificates stated essential in the person specification or you will not be able to complete pre-employment checksWe provide hospital services from two acute sites – Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. Job responsibilitiesIn addition to the main duties listed above if the appointee has trained in Paediatric Emergency Medicine and would be involved in the future development of a front of house Paediatric serviceThe post holder will be expected to provide a comprehensive clinical service to consultant colleagues in clinical disciplines in the Hospital and to General Practitioners. Involvement in strategic service planning will be expected, as will exchange of information needed to ensure effective service delivery.For management purposes and use of resources the post holders will be accountable to the Care Group Clinical Director and will ensure the effective and efficient use of resources allocated.The appointee will participate in the Emergency Medicine on-call rota as part of a team of consultants.The appointee will be expected to provide cover when colleagues are on annual and study/professional leave.Research activities which are considered to be an inherent part of normal clinical duties will be encouraged and limited research funding may be available following successful application to the local research and development committee.Administrative duties the post holder will have continuing responsibility at all times for the care of patients in their charge and for contributing in the smooth running of the service. The post holders will also be expected to share the administrative duties with the other consultants including attendance at Care Group and Departmental meetings, etc.The post holder will be responsible for the professional supervision and management of junior staff to ensure standards of care are maintained. Development of individuals and of teams is part of the consultant role.The appointee will be expected to participate in the postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates attached to the Trust and in the training of all grades of staff.CPD – the post holder is responsible for ensuring that they meet the College requirements for CPD.It is expected that the appointees will actively and regularly participate in Clinical Audit. Evaluation of the departments performance against agreed measures will take place.If the post holder is involved in the care of a patient who subsequently initiates a claim against the Trust they will be expected to provide, free of a charge, an opinion and statement of facts on the case.Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of all patients presenting to the Emergency DepartmentTo share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Emergency DepartmentTeaching and Training of intermediate and, junior medical staff, nursing staff, medical students and paramedic staffTo actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.To have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD).The new appointee will be expected to join the consultant body in leading by example, managing the sickest patients, engaging with the juniors to ensure safe and timely management and working with the nursing staff to ensure adequate patient flow.The appointees will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trusts clinical governanceprogramme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, clinical guidelines/pathways, and professional development, appraisal and risk management.Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

  • MB ChB or equivalent,
  • FRCEM or equivalent
  • PMETB Approval
  • Successful completion of ALS, ATLS or ETC, APLS or EPALS with certification in date

Desirable

  • Postgraduate qualification, Paediatrics (especially Paediatric Emergency Medicine), Geriatric Medicine or General Practice
  • Certificate of medical education or equivalent
  • Successful completion of instructor course

Experience
Essential

  • Experience in Emergency Medicine
  • Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential
  • Experience of supervising, training and teaching trainees
  • Able to provide evidence of career planning through appraisal process
  • Clear evidence of professional development at all stages of career
  • Evidence of being up to date with professional development

Desirable

  • Published research or audit
  • Instructor on GIC/ATLS/ALS/APLS or equivalent
  • Experienced instructor using simulation based training
  • RITA C/ARCP outcome 1 at annual appraisals during specialty training or equivalent
  • Experience working in primary care environment
  • Experience of providing care in the pre hospital environment
  • Experience or critical care or acute medicine at a registrar/specialist trainee level

Statutory Registration
Essential

  • Full and specialist registration with GMC (and Licence to Practice).
  • Holder of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or should have attained or be within 6 months of attaining CCT in Specialty at time of interview.

Special Skills & Knowledge
Essential

  • Good clinical skills including management of acute medical admissions
  • Demonstrates ability to care for patients admitted with head injury not needing neurosurgical intervention
  • To be able to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems within the service
  • Good clinical skills
  • Understands factors affecting patient safety
  • Experience and understanding of audit and conducting clinical audit
  • Demonstrates awareness of developing situations in clinical environment

  • Successful completion of Medical ALS, MIMMS
