OverviewThe Riverscapes Consortium Communications Officer (CCO) will lead the organization’s communication strategy, ensuring a unified approach that advances our mission to promote healthy riverscapes for all ( ). This leadership role is tailored for a visionary communicator passionate about environmental stewardship. The CCO will manage both internal communications within the Riverscapes Consortium ( ) and external communications, actively engaging practitioners, end-users, researchers, and policymakers to foster collaborative relationships and amplify our impact within the riverscapes community.The CCO will be hosted by the Riverscapes Assessment and Monitoring (RAM) Lab at Utah State University, a founding member of the Riverscapes Consortium ( ). The focus will be on promoting the broader international collaboration among Riverscapes Consortium communities ( ), rather than on USU or RAM specifically. We seek a creative and charismatic leader, skilled in science communication, to enhance and expand the Riverscapes Consortium communities, while improving user experiences with our products ( ). The ideal candidate will possess a background in professional communications, public relations, or marketing, complemented by experience in science communication, facilitation, community organizing, and outreach. A genuine commitment to improving the health of riverscapes for all is essential.ResponsibilitiesPrimary Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for overseeing and executing all aspects of the Riverscapes Consortium’s community platform, outward communications, marketing strategies, and engagement efforts. This includes developing resources such as web documentation, help desk support, outreach initiatives, and training—both virtual and in-person.
  • Serve as a liaison between the research and development teams and the users of our products, collaborating with government agency personnel, NGOs, researchers, students, and practitioners to facilitate product adoption and gather feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Supervise Application Support Specialists and co-supervise lab technicians, ensuring that deliverables on our funded grants and agreements are met effectively. Joining a large and diverse team of internationally recognized researchers, restoration practitioners, and resource managers, the selected candidate will play a vital role in helping the team reach and serve a broader audience committed to enhancing riverscape health and sustainability.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Lead and Manage the Riverscapes Community Platform: Oversee the riverscapes community platform (

), actively engaging with users to promote broader adoption and participation. * Develop and Execute Communication Strategy: Formulate and implement the comprehensive communication strategy for the Riverscapes Consortium, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.

  • Supervise Application Support: Collaborate with Application Support Specialists to organize and manage user tickets and requests through our help desk software (

). * Provide In-Person Support: Offer direct interaction and assistance to partners utilizing Riverscapes Consortium resources, enhancing their experience and engagement.

  • Liaison with Partners and Sponsors: Act as a key point of contact for agency and NGO partners, facilitating communication and coordination regarding their needs, while relaying relevant information to RAM personnel and researchers at USU and North Arrow Research.
  • Organize Workshops and Short Courses: Oversee the marketing, facilitation, organization, training, and delivery of workshops and short courses, ensuring effective engagement and knowledge transfer.
  • Coordinate Documentation Resources: Manage, edit, and oversee all Riverscapes Consortium help and documentation resources, including web pages, tutorials, videos, help desk resources, and internal materials. While not acting as the technical lead or author of all documentation, the CCO will be responsible for approving content, editing for clarity, and enforcing consistent and user-friendly standards.

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree plus two years of relevant work experience; OR a master’s degree; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing or similar fields with an interest in riverscapes and watersheds.
  • As part of the experience/education above – 3 years of experience in communications, PR, or related areas, with at least 1 year in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record of developing successful communication strategies and managing high-profile projects.
  • Experience in customer service, retail, sales, or similar (ability to empathize with product users).
  • Strong aesthetic intuition with graphical design and/or web design skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with digital marketing and social media strategies is a plus.
  • Experience managing community platforms is desirable.
  • Experience managing personnel and coordinating communication between technically savvy programmers and end users.
  • Some knowledge of riverscapes, process-based restoration, watershed sciences, environmental management and GIS is a plus.
  • Appreciation of concepts of riverscape health, resilience, sustainability.
  • Familiarity or experience with any of the Riverscapes Consortium apps, models and data products.
  • Experiencing working with or for community groups, watershed councils, grass-roots campaigns as well as local, state and federal agencies.
  • Any foreign languages will be helpful for some of our international engagements.
