SALARY SCALE: MPG + Management point if additional responsibilities are allocated
WORKING HOURS:
- 38 weeks of student contact time
- 5 days of INSET training
- 5 days of directed CPD
OVERVIEW OF THE POSTThe Teacher is responsible for leading a class within the school’s age-phase groups. Key responsibilities include assessing student needs, planning and delivering group and individual programs, monitoring progress, and contributing to the school’s wider aims and ethos. Teachers are expected to employ specialized teaching approaches for learners with ASD and manage Learning Support Assistants effectively.Teachers with subject specialism may also oversee curriculum delivery across the school as subject coordinators, receiving a management point for this responsibility.MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS1. Knowledge and Understanding
- Demonstrate expertise in teaching students with ASD, including specialized strategies and curriculum adaptations.
- Understand statutory curriculum requirements, assessment procedures, and the school’s aims.
2. Planning and Setting Expectations
- Plan lessons, courses, and individual programs with clear objectives to raise student attainment.
- Contribute to curriculum development and set challenging, achievable targets.
3. Teaching and Managing Pupil Learning and Care
- Use creative strategies for teaching and behaviour management, including visual learning techniques.
- Ensure all curriculum requirements and EHCP outcomes are systematically addressed.
- Supervise and support students during lunch, participating in mealtime activities.
4. Assessment and Evaluation
- Maintain detailed records and monitor student progress in line with the school’s assessment systems.
- Use data to set realistic targets for improvement.
5. Pupil Achievement
- Track individual progress and maintain evidence of achievements.
- Ensure records accurately reflect student progress relative to prior attainment.
6. Relations with Parents and the Wider Community
- Build partnerships with parents to involve them in their child’s learning and development.
- Provide regular updates on progress and targets.
- Liaise with external agencies and the wider community as needed.
7. Managing Own Performance and Development
- Continuously evaluate teaching practices and prioritise professional development.
- Participate fully in training opportunities and performance monitoring.
8. Managing and Developing Staff
- Effectively manage LSAs, providing guidance and clear expectations.
- Involve LSAs in planning and activities, offering support and feedback.
9. Managing Resources
- Maintain a stimulating learning environment, including resources, displays, and ICT use.
- Advise leadership on resource needs and priorities.
10. Strategic Leadership
- Contribute to the school’s policies and aspirations.
- Actively participate in curriculum discussions and provide updates to leadership on strategies and priorities.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- The teaching year includes 190 days (38 weeks over six terms), five statutory training days, and five additional professional development days.
- Teaching hours are Monday to Thursday, 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., and Friday, 9:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Teachers are expected to be present from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. to fulfill all duties.
- Teachers may cover for absent colleagues and work across different areas of the school as needed.
SELECTION CRITERIAQualificationsEssential:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- No criminal convictions or cautions relevant to the safety and welfare of students
Desirable:
- Clean, current driving license
ExperienceEssential:
- Experience teaching children with special educational needs, particularly ASD
- Successful experience in an educational setting
Desirable:
- Experience in curriculum planning and diverse teaching styles
KnowledgeCandidates must demonstrate knowledge of:
- Autism Spectrum and associated disorders
- Relevant legislation, including the Children & Families Bill and Keeping Children Safe in Education
- Positive strategies for supporting children with ASD and challenging behaviours
- Health and Safety and equal opportunities practices
Skills and AbilitiesCandidates must demonstrate the ability to:
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons for students with ASD
- Lead and motivate others effectively
- Communicate clearly with students, staff, and parents
- Maintain accurate records and manage resources efficiently
- Build positive relationships with the school community and external agencies
- Mentor and train staff as needed
