OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO Regional Office in Havana and the direct supervision of the National Officer of the Communication and Information Programme, the incumbent is responsible for providing technical support to Programme activities related to strengthening institutional capacities of the Dominican media to prepare and respond to emergencies and disasters.
In particular, the successful applicant will undertake the following assignments:
- Carry out a review the locally produced “Guidelines for media coverage of emergencies and disasters” and incorporate, as necessary, provisions in relation to:
- Business continuity operations
- Contents production
- Infrastructure preservation, including archived material
- Women journalists ‘safety
- Multistakeholder participation
- Psychological support to media staff
- Other relevant for the local context
- Perform and deliver concrete actions in the implementation of capacity building activities aimed at supporting the development of institutional protocols for improved preparedness and response to emergencies and disasters
- Produce and report on workshops minutes and a proposal of next steps
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Master degree in Social Communication, Information Sciences, Disaster Risk Management or in a related field.
Work Experience:
- At least 10 years of relevant experience in journalism, media research, media development, journalism education and/or training, or related fields
- Proven experience in technical report writing
- Experience in research or development projects addressing disaster risk reduction
Skills/competencies:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with proven ability to draft clearly and concisely.
- Excellent analytical and research skills
- Knowledge of the local media landscape
- Advanced IT skills, excellent command of Microsoft Office tools.
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
- Ability to work under pressure and to meet tight deadlines, paying close attention to detail and quality of work.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; strong service orientation and ability to deal efficiently with partners at different levels.
Languages:
- Fluency in Spanish (written and spoken). Working knowledge of English
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- PhD in Social Communication, Journalism, Information Sciences, Disaster Risk Management or in a related field.
Work Experience:
- Experience in similar roles within the UN system or in projects implemented in collaboration with UN Organizations
Skills:
- Knowledge of UNESCO´s mandate in the Communication and Information Programme
Language Skills
- Advance knowledge of English.
