Details:Mission and objectives:The Office of the Special Adviser on Africa is responsible for assisting the Secretary-General in coordinating, integrating and aligning United Nations action on the interlinkages between peace, security, human rights and development in Africa, enhancing international support for Africa’s development and security and facilitating intergovernmental deliberations on Africa at the global level, in particular those relating to the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), which was recently transformed into the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD.Context:This assignment is part of OSAA’s mission to promote a new narrative on Africa’s development priorities and advocate for the continent’s interests in global fora. The online course, titled “Peace and Development Nexus in Africa: Governance, Financing, and Country Systems,” was launched in English in November 2024, and the Office is now preparing the French and Portuguese versions for launch.
The online volunteers will play a critical role in ensuring that the translated course content is clear, accurate, and consistent with the original English materials. By contributing to this work, volunteers gain exposure to the workings of the United Nations, with a specific focus on Africa’s strategic development agenda.
For more information about OSAA’s strategic priorities, visit the OSAA webpage.Task type:Translation and InterpretationTask description:The United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (UN OSAA) is seeking two motivated and detail-oriented online volunteers to assist in proofreading translated content for an online course on the Peace and Development Nexus in Africa: Governance, Financing, and Country Systems. The course material consists of 5 modules, each exploring a specific aspect of a 4-part conceptual framework with the 5th module encompassing a case study. Each volunteer will proofread about 84,000 words.
1. Proofread and Verify Translations: Carefully review the translated course content in either French or Portuguese to ensure linguistic accuracy, clarity, and consistency with the original English version. Special attention should be given to development and economic terminology specific to the African context.
2. Ensure Terminological Consistency: Cross-check key concepts, policy language, and sector-specific terms to ensure they align with established UN terminology and reflect accurate translation in both language versions.
3. Data Skills Integration: Support the review of visual aids, data points, and figures to ensure alignment with translated content and verify data accuracy where necessary.
4. Collaborate and Report: Work closely with OSAA staff, sharing progress updates via email and virtual platforms. Volunteers will participate in regular check-ins to discuss deliverables and receive feedback.Requirements:Education: Current students or graduates in economics, development studies, political science, history, law, or other relevant areas with a strong focus on Africa.

  • Language Proficiency: For the French proofreading role, exceptional command of French and English is required. For the Portuguese proofreading role, exceptional command of Portuguese and English is required.
  • Content Knowledge: Familiarity with development, economic, and political terminology, particularly in the African context, is essential.

Proofreading Skills: Proven ability to review, refine, and edit content for accuracy, clarity, and consistency.

  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Word and familiarity with online collaboration tools (e.g., Microsoft Teams and SharePoint).
  • Data Literacy: Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and basic knowledge of data analysis, including reviewing graphs and infographics, would be an asset.
