Introduction
The UNDP’s Aid for Trade (AfT) in Central Asia project supports inclusive and sustainable growth by promoting green value chains, fostering economic resilience, and enabling integration into regional and global markets. Transitioning textile value chains to circularity in Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan complements these objectives by driving employment-rich growth, reducing environmental impacts, and preparing industries for evolving global market demands. The initiative focuses on supporting Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan’s textile and garment sector – key economic drivers and export industries – through circular economy principles to enhance sustainability, competitiveness, and resilience. The report will cover the textile value chains of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, focusing on adopting circular economy principles. The scope includes reviewing the global and regional context for CE transitions in textiles, mapping stakeholders across the value chain and their roles in promoting circularity; identifying high-potential CE practices, including recycling, sustainable production, and material reuse, including digitalization practices; addressing cross-cutting issues such as gender inclusion, environmental impacts, and market competitiveness. The scope will also integrate policy analysis, stakeholder consultations, and practical case studies to illustrate the challenges and opportunities in transitioning to circular models.
