In return, we promise to provide support, opportunities and performance-led financial rewards at a workplace where you can shape the future, win as a team and grow with us.About the roleWe’re looking for an Intermediate or Senior Underwriter, Commercial Lines (Property & Casualty) to join the team in our Calgary or Edmonton office.As an Intermediate/Senior Underwriter, Commercial Insurance, you will work with our National Brokers focusing on a range of commercial and industrial risks, including such diverse segments as, manufacturing, real estate, commercial and residential realty, contracting, wholesaling, warehousing, health services and other financial, business professional services. Your work will have a big impact on the Commercial Insurance team and you will work very closely with our other commercial lines teams.People will count on you to think outside the box and provide creative solutions. You will build a profitable portfolio of accounts above our $10,000 minimum premium with an emphasis on quoting new business by utilizing your experience.This position is a permanent full-time hybrid position with a minimum of 2 days per week working in the office which is based in Calgary or Edmonton.What you’ll do here:
- Assess, evaluate and negotiate on Mid Market commercial risks with minimum premiums of $10,000 including property, liability, umbrella, inland marine product lines
- Apply effective pricing and underwriting strategies in accordance with the company guidelines and personal underwriting authority limits
- Within your level of authority, quote, negotiate, sell, and authorize the acceptance of moderate to complex new business, renewals, and endorsements to develop and retain profitable business according to the business plan established for the department
- Build strong relationships with National Brokers including broker visits, insurance industry functions and marketing events in the territory including Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba
- Arrange reinsurance if and when required
- Answer inquiries, develop and monitor business with brokers through visits, discussions, and correspondence
- Use the computer system for policy inquiry, electronic filing, underwriting and rating transactions
- Make recommendations to improve the department and increase its efficiency
- Foster cooperative broker relationships to identify and develop sales opportunities
- Some travel is required
What you bring to the table:
- Minimum 5 years of complex Commercial Underwriting experience in Property and Casualty
- Completion of CIP designation (or progress towards) is an asset
- Strong track record of developing, mentoring and coaching teammates
- Can develop and maintain excellent relationships with brokers
- Great communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Strong negotiating skills and business savvy
- Strong analytical and technical experience
- Initiative and can work under pressure
- Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office products and computer tools
- No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada
