Projects may include trail construction & maintenance, habitat improvement, hazardous fuels reduction, re-vegetation, historic preservation, and local environmental service projects. ALCC provides opportunities for members to learn about and connect with the environment, issues surrounding conservation, and local Indigenous values.ALCC crews work in a variety of National Parks, National Forests, and other public areas. Selected members are placed on a crew which will then collaborate to perform project work. ALCC is a non-residential program and does not offer housing. Gear and equipment rental is available upon request.ALCC Farm Corps history and mission we aim to spur a movement to restore our local food systems through agriculture, seed, and traditional knowledge. Based in Acoma we recruit young people from ages 18 to 25 years old in a immersive holistic approach to revitalizing Acoma Food Systems. As of 2019 there are less than 10 farmers in Acoma consistently practicing irrigated farming and “nibama” or dryland farming is nearly extinct. Since 2011 we have been working to revive our agricultural knowledge, practices, seed, and cultural perspective through our young people. All our practices are inherently sustainable and are based on stewardship and conservation. Connecting youth and elders started with the construction of a 30×96 foot hoop house where all of the crops have gone to directly to feed the elders of the center. This allows for year-round local food production. We recognize that one of the issues to food access is that our community needs to not only know how to grow food, but also how to prepare it. Our program had developed cooking classes for our members. We’ve integrated traditional food classes into our program which are based around the food we’ve grown. Reviving our seed, we recognize that our local heirloom seed are varieties that have taken countless generations to cultivate a drought and heat tolerant species. We design all our fields to optimize the space for seed production to increase these vanishing varieties. We have also created a community seed bank from our yields which currently have 56 local varieties available for distribution. The Acoma office is located in front of the Acoma Senior Center at 70 Pinsbaari Drive Acoma NM 87034.
