Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Indigenous Relations, Advisor.Reporting to the Senior Manager, Indigenous Relations, this position is responsible for developing and maintaining meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities, ensuring effective engagement, consultation, and partnership initiatives that align with corporate and regulatory commitments, while supporting reconciliation, capacity-building, and sustainable economic opportunities.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Develop and recommend policies and programs for Indigenous Relations (IR) within Ontario Power Generation (OPG). This involves, identification of needs, development of specific initiatives, and coordination of activities within the company, monitor and evaluate effectiveness.
- Draft budgets, financial payment models and cost forecasts, for internal review that might support such things as past grievance negotiations, potential business opportunities and requested program support.
- Implement the Indigenous Relations Program involving the identification of needs, development of specific initiatives and coordination of activities within Ontario Power Generation (OPG). Assist in the research, analysis and development of new relationship models and various initiatives related to strengthening Indigenous relations across the corporation. Work with internal operating groups and business functions to provide education, advice and guidance as it relates to outreach and consultation to foster positive business relationships with Indigenous communities:
- Lead the implementation of agreements, internal programs, and provide advice and guidance on the duty to consult procedures.
- Oversee internal and external Indigenous Relations events, including but not limited to; OPG’s National Indigenous Peoples Day and awards celebrations.
- Oversee the delivery of the Indigenous Relations Program. Provide input into the preparation of the annual program report for submission to the Board of Directors.
- Represent the Indigenous Relations function on interdisciplinary OPG project teams requiring coordination of work effort and influencing internal stakeholders to arrive at a consensus on complex and controversial issues.
- Support senior staff in past grievance negotiations with First Nations by conducting reviews of files and other sources of information (both internal and external) to better understand the grievances, recommending negotiating approaches and assisting in the drafting of Business Cases for Senior Management approval. Participate in negotiations, as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 4-Year University Degree in Social Sciences
- 6+ years of relevant experience supporting Indigenous Relations
- Strong Knowledge of Indigenous History, Rights, and Governance – Understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, treaty rights, governance structures, and the legal and regulatory frameworks related to Indigenous consultation and engagement (e.g., Duty to Consult, UNDRIP, TRC Calls to Action).
- Experience in Indigenous Engagement & Relationship-Building – Demonstrated ability to foster meaningful, trust-based relationships with Indigenous communities, leadership, and organizations, including experience in consultation, negotiation, and partnership development.
- Cultural Competency & Sensitivity – Strong awareness of Indigenous traditions, protocols, and cultural practices, with the ability to engage respectfully and appropriately in diverse Indigenous contexts.
- Project Management & Strategic Planning Skills – Ability to plan, coordinate, and manage Indigenous relations initiatives, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives, regulatory requirements, and community priorities.
- Strong Communication & Facilitation Skills – Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with experience in facilitating discussions, preparing reports, and conveying complex information in a way that is accessible and meaningful to Indigenous and corporate audiences.
- Experience in Policy, Regulatory, and Economic Development Contexts – Familiarity with policies affecting Indigenous communities, economic development opportunities, and funding mechanisms that support Indigenous participation in major projects and business ventures.
