Job Summary The Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center is seeking candidates for an Agriculture Technician. This position is located in Fairhope, AL.

The individual selected for this position will perform basic level farm and technical research tasks for the center.
With its location one mile east of Mobile Bay and 30 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center in Fairhope enjoys a climate that’s ideal for a highly diversified research program, and the GCREC takes full advantage of that. The long growing seasons and mostly mild winters allow for research on all of Alabama’s major row crops as well as on turfgrass, vegetable and fruit crops, pecans, beef cattle and forage. The GCREC’s top goal is to help southwest Alabama producers maximize their income.

Essential Functions Essential functions include, but are not limited to:

  • Operating and maintaining farm machinery and equipment in support of agricultural research.

  • Assisting in soil preparation, planting, laying out research plots, harvesting row crops.

  • Application of fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals.

  • Assist in the production of horticulture crops such as vegetables, fruits and nuts; occasional handling of livestock.

  • Performing other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

  • Some light construction, building maintenance, and irrigation system repair and maintenance will also be expected when needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:
Level I: High school diploma or equivalent; no experience required.
Level II: High school diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of experience in farming practices.
Level III: High school diploma or equivalent plus 4 years of experience in farming practices.
Level IV: High school diploma or equivalent plus 6 years of experience in farming practices.
*Indicated education is required; no substitutions allowed.
Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.

Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications

Minimum Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of farm equipment and safety.
  • Knowledge of working and handling cattle.
  • Ability to count and use measuring equipment accurately.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Minimum Technology Skills
Minimum License and Certifications A valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to selection is required.

Desired Qualifications

Desired Qualifications Experience and/or knowledge of row crop production and ability to operate farm equipment, loader and/or backhoe is desired.
