Details:Mission and objectives:The Office of the Special Adviser on Africa is responsible for assisting the Secretary-General in coordinating, integrating and aligning United Nations action on the interlinkages between peace, security, human rights and development in Africa, enhancing international support for Africa’s development and security and facilitating intergovernmental deliberations on Africa at the global level, in particular those relating to the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), which was recently transformed into the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD.Context:Based on the Office’s mandate, vision, and mission, OSAA is strengthening the data capacity for evidence-based decision-making, advocacy, and policy monitoring and evaluation to support Africa’s transformative agenda. To fulfill this mandate of evidence-based decision-making, SMU data is orchestrating a data eco-system in the Microsoft Azure Cloud platform to feed data into various applications, including a Power BI dashboard. The online volunteer is expected to support the SMU Data Unit to improve the existing data-driven eco-system, which pipelines data from various sources to create a data repository for informing decision-making and policy proposals on development issues.Task type:Data processingTask description:We are looking for an Online Volunteer to support our organization/project team by assisting us with building AI applications for automated task management. The Online Volunteer will be under the guidance of the Lead of the Strategic Management Unit (SMU) Data Team.The Online Volunteer tasks are as follows:Assist with developing applications using Python and large language models (LLMs).
Support the team in implementing retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques.
Collaborate on testing and debugging applications to ensure functionality and performance.
Aid in the deployment of applications on the Azure cloud platform.
Participate in team meetings and contribute to project planning and brainstorming sessions.The Online Volunteer/s will have the opportunity to build connections with the SMU at UN OSAA and learn about the ways in which data can support the unit.Requirements:Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 3 years) in working with AI models;
Experience in working with APIs;
Familiarity with Python programming and machine learning concepts.
Basic understanding of cloud platforms, preferably Azure.
Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.Work Hours: 16-20
