Responsibilities:

  • Understands and follows the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) code of ethics.
  • Maintains their first allegiance to the people they support by demonstrating respect and supporting problem solving skills.
  • Promotes daily thinking and problem-solving skills of the person served, using active listening and coaching skills to reduce their dependency on staff and increase their self-esteem.
  • Understands and promotes the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights; teaching, advocating for and modeling rights to people supported.
  • Encourages growth and recognizes autonomy while being attentive and energetic in always reducing the risk of harm by providing all necessary supports indicated in the person-centered plan.
  • Has solid knowledge and understanding of person-centered planning and service delivery.
  • Follows all safety and risk guidelines for people supported.
  • Practices safe and sound crisis prevention and intervention strategies by promoting and teaching the use of preventative strategies, therapeutic activities and recreation, and early intervention techniques.
  • Recognizes abuse, neglect, mistreatment, and exploitation (ANME) and as a mandated reporter, reports unusual and major unusual incidents following the MUI and ANME policies.
  • Provides assistance in navigating the community when transporting to and from appointments.
  • Administers prescribed medications and documents on MAR/e-MAR.
  • Provides the necessary level of support, as indicated in the person-centered plan, while empowering and advocating for the individual before, during and after medical appointments.
  • Maintain medical appointment tracking system for all individuals receiving support.
  • Confirm and transport individual(s) and employees to all assigned medical appointments as instructed by Program Director in collaboration with Company RN/LPN. Communicate and assist in scheduling follow-up appointments with team.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of each appointment and communicate any appointment needs, results, etc. in writing to the treatment team (Program Director, Program Specialist, RN/LPN, Guardian(s) & county appointed service coordinator) for the individual receiving services.
  • Use, maintain and update medical appointment books for each person.
  • Communicate with RN/LPN in writing with any changes in medications so that the medication record (MAR/e-MAR) can be updated accordingly.
  • Complete mechanical checklist for vehicle at the beginning and end of each shift. Additionally, maintain cleanliness, gas, etc. for vehicle in use.
  • Provide transportation in accordance with BSL company policies, procedures and abides by all traffic laws and regulations.
  • Maintain mileage records per BSL Policy and Procedures.
  • Maintain a timely schedule for pickup and drop off for each person with coordination from the RN/LPN and Program Director. Maintain location addresses and be able to adjust routes to ensure timely transportation.
  • Maintain confidentiality with all records of individuals supported (HIPAA)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:Education & Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license with 5 points or less
  • Must have valid auto insurance
  • Must have a reliable vehicle for transportation requirements of this position
  • Meets eligibility on required background and registry checks for developmental disability employment as defined by the Ohio Revised Code
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Experience with MS Office Suite
  • Professional communication/customer service experience (preferred)
  • Knowledge of HIPAA Rules and Regulations
  • At least one year working in the developmental disabilities field (preferred)
  • CNA/STNA or other medical-related experience (preferred)

Required Information Technology (IT) Systems Skills and Proficiency:Use of a tablet, laptop or cellphone for documentation, timekeeping, incident reporting, etc.Skills and Experience:At least one year working in the developmental disabilities field is required.Physical Demands and Work Environment:The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. DSPs must be prepared to stand, walk, sit or move for prolonged periods of time to maintain engagement with the person supported. This position will require daily (multiple times, daily) transportation for individuals/appointments assigned. Employee must have the ability to physically assist individuals with behavioral and physiological disabilities into and out of vehicles for transportation and help them navigate the community. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This position is based on the needs of people supported. Services are provided 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. Medical appointments for individuals will be scheduled on a regular basis Monday-Friday depending on individual availability and office hours of medical appointments.Travel:
This function of this position is to provide transportation and will require constant travel to and from scheduled appointments.Working Environment:Most work will be performed at home-like settings, in a vehicle or community facilities with the potential of exposure to infectious disease. Universal precautions are required to minimize the risk of infections. Work sites may include locations that are not barrier-free.
