You will be part of the North West & Central Region (NW&C) which consist of three routes – North West, Central and West Coast South – and a regional team supporting Regional Major Programmes & Professional services.

Brief Description

The purpose of this role is to provide company arboriculture expertise on the management of trees and vegetation and their impact on associated assets.

The successful applicant would be based either at our Northampton or Wolverhampton office.

About the role (External)

We will need you to:

Write clear and concise vegetation management specifications alongside an ecologist for our upcoming projects in line with the relevant Network Rail Standards.

Undertake a range of comprehensive rail arboriculture surveys.

Write clear, concise surveys, map target notes, and have the ability to compile Vegetation Management scoping documents in line with the relevant Network Rail Standards and survey objectives.

Carry out data analysis from survey results and input findings onto IT mapping systems including GPS locations.

Undertake long term survey work planning in liaison with the senior arborist and work to jointly set achievable survey timescales.

You will have an experienced team of arboriculturists and ecologists to learn from, so that you can develop in this role.

In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:

  • Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills.
  • Comprehensive field experience.
  • A relevant qualification in arboriculture i.e. National Certificate of Arboriculture or Royal Forestry Society Diploma or Level 3 City & Guilds.
  • Proven knowledge of the identification and implications of structural weakness, decay, pest diseases and the effects of tree root systems on rail infrastructure and adjoining land.
  • Be available to work across the NW&C Region.
  • Willing to work some weekend and night shifts in order to survey sections of track inaccessible during normal train operations.
  • A good working knowledge of Network Rail IT systems and mapping tools.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Task orientated teammate.

We would also like but it isn’t crucial to have/to be:

  • Knowledge of operational railway environment.
  • A valid Sentinel card with Controller of Site safety (COSS) or IWA
  • Membership of professional body.
  • Experience of Arboriculture practice within the railway environment.
  • Experience working alone or as part of a small team.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and GPS mapping.
  • LANTRA Professional Tree Inspector
