As the Secretary General’s Innovation Lab, UN Global Pulse supports responsible and inclusive innovation across the UN system. We collaborate with partners on new solutions and support the whole UN family in its transformation towards a UN 2.0.Our work spans a spectrum of innovations using data, digital, behavioural science, strategic foresight methods. UN Global Pulse experiments and supports others in their experimentation with new capabilities and tools. Our role is not only to enable innovation but also to encourage a culture of creativity across the United Nations.We are seeking an Online Volunteer with experience in communications and a strong interest in behavioural science to support the promotion and growth of the UN Behavioural Science Group. The primary objective of this role is to develop a strategic communications report that outlines recommendations for increasing engagement, expanding membership, and enhancing the visibility of the Group.Context:Provide brief overview of the task’s background, for instance, what area or topic you expect Online Volunteers to research, what the results will be used for, and how it relates to your organizations work. Please indicate how you expect the Online Volunteers’ contributions through this task will support your organization’s efforts towards achieving the SDGs.Many policies and programmes designed to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals require people to change their behaviours. This could be transitioning to clean energy, addressing unequal gender and social norms, bridging the formal-informal divide and decreasing the spread of false information.Behavioural science (BeSci) can help enable interventions to produce the desired behavioural change. Behaviourally informed interventions leverage what is known about human behaviour and decision-making, and invest in better diagnosing specific behavioural barriers and enablers to help people achieve their aims.Since the launch of the Secretary-General’s Guidance Note on Behavioural Science, behavioural science has gained momentum across the UN. Interest and initiatives have expanded and collaboration increased among Entities, academia, Member States and other partners. Furthermore, behavioural science has become part of the Secretary-General’s “Quintet of Change”, which highlights key capabilities for UN 2.0.These and other UN-wide behavioural science efforts have been led by the UN Behavioural Science Group, an initiative of the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General and the UN Innovation Network, which brings together over 6,000 colleagues from 70+ UN Entities and 150+ countries interested in applying behavioural science, as well as several thousand non-UN observers. Within the UN BeSci Group, the UN Behavioural Science Team supports UN Entities in developing and implementing plans for systematic BeSci application based on good practice, and technically applying behavioural science in projects. The Team also provides thought leadership through key UN-wide BeSci publications, delivers a tailored UN BeSci learning programme and fosters knowledge sharing and collaboration across the UN and beyond.The UN Behavioural Science Group collaborates informally with various partners, including academic institutions. We are seeking a UN Volunteer to assist in researching ways to strengthen and formalize these partnerships, which will play a crucial role in advancing our efforts to integrate behavioural science across the UN. The research findings will help us establish agreements that bring behavioural science experts into the UN, providing technical support at key moments and in strategic areas.Task type:Communication and social mediaTask description:We are looking for one online volunteer to undertake the following responsibilities:– Assessing current communication channels and engagement strategies to identify opportunities for improvement.
– Developing and recommending campaign strategies to promote the UN Behavioural Science Group, attract new members, and strengthen participation.
– Sourcing and reviewing best practices in communications for professional networks and communities of practice.
– Engaging with key stakeholders within the UN and beyond to assess communication needs and refine messaging, including user testing methods such as interviews to gain deeper insights.Deliverable1. Producing a summary comprehensive communications report that includes insights, strategies, and actionable recommendations for increasing the impact and reach of the UN Behavioural Science Group and2. Showcasing key findings by integrating them into 2-4 representative presentations and/or online publications.Requirements:Candidates should possess strong communication, research, and analytical skills, with experience in developing and implementing communications strategies. A background in campaign development, stakeholder engagement, or digital communications is highly desirable. An interest in gaining further experience in behavioural science communication and outreach is essential. Experience in managing communications for professional networks, communities of practice, or academic institutions is an asset, as is practical knowledge of behavioural science and its applications. A degree in a relevant field (e.g., communications, behavioural science, psychology, public policy) is advantageous. Proficiency in English, either as a native speaker or at a professional working level, is required. Candidates from the Global South are strongly encouraged to apply.Work Hours: 16-20
