Job SummaryJob DescriptionWhat is the opportunity?The Corporate Development team plays a critical role in helping shape and execute RBC’s inorganic growth strategy. The team is comprised of a group of highly experienced, dynamic, forward-thinking professionals who provide an internal M&A advisory function and work closely with RBC’s CEO, Group Executives, and senior business executives on strategic priorities. The team has led a number of high-profile initiatives including, most recently, RBC’s acquisitions of HSBC Bank Canada and Brewin Dolphin.For this important and high exposure role, we are looking for an energetic candidate, who has a mix of strategic thinking and deal execution capabilities. The candidate should have strong communication and presentation capabilities. In addition, the candidate should possess critical thinking skills along with analytical rigor to generate value-added insights to enhance the efforts of the Corporate Development team.As an Associate, you will be a key member of the Corporate Development team responsible for helping across a wide variety of strategic initiatives, including assessment of market trends and competitive landscape, supporting the development, evaluation and execution of mergers & acquisitions, divestitures, and joint venture opportunities as well as ideation in support of inorganic initiatives, globally across the Bank.What you will do?

  • Bring an entrepreneurial and creative approach to developing new, innovative ideas with the goal of motivating collective organizational discussion and debate on pathways for growth.
  • Along with senior Corporate Development colleagues, help define and scope strategic initiatives by preparing thoughtful business cases, to ensure decisions are based on comprehensive financial and strategic analyses.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with business and functional teams and support the development of inorganic growth plans.
  • Foster collaboration between RBC’s business units and functions through regular engagement (e.g. through idea generation sessions), ensuring connectivity across business units and functions in support of inorganic growth
  • Work closely with the Corporate Venture Capital team to ensure aligned focus in advancing RBC’s inorganic growth agenda.
  • Play an important role in strategic idea generation and review of potential acquisition and divestiture opportunities for strategic fit and value case.
  • Lead the preparation of strategic analysis of potential growth areas for RBC.
  • Lead the preparation of financial analysis, including building of company forecast models, assessment of synergies / dis-synergies, valuation analysis, and impact of acquisition / divestiture on RBC Group.
  • Assist in the execution of acquisition and divestiture transactions, including day-to-day coordination of transactions, leading due diligence efforts, and providing support on deal negotiations.
  • Prepare thoughtful analyses and recommendations on acquisition and divestiture projects for the Group Executive, Board of Directors and other senior members of RBC.
  • Interact with senior RBC business leaders, external advisors, counterparties and target companies.
  • Maintain good knowledge of market developments and industry dynamics and their impact on the Bank.
  • Partner with Investor Relations, Finance, Law Group and Enterprise Strategy on the development of public disclosures in relation to inorganic initiatives
  • Support on valuation-related Enterprise initiatives including annual goodwill impairment testing, recovery and resolution planning and legal entity tax valuations, as required
  • Provide support as required on other strategic initiatives and Bank projects.

What you need to succeed?Must Have

  • Honours-level University degree in Business/Finance/Economics/Math/Engineering or similar field
  • 4+ years of experience in corporate finance or M&A, preferably within an M&A team in a financial services organization, investment bank or accounting firm
  • Advanced financial modeling skills, including valuation analysis.
  • Strong initiative to undertake comprehensive analysis to spark idea generation.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing insightful presentation materials to assess the market landscape and potential target companies.
  • Understanding of the financial services sector and ability to lead research and analysis work across various lines of banking businesses.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interact at senior levels internally and externally. Ability to express clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Naturally curious with a keenness for learning and development
  • Ability to be resourceful and solutions-focused
  • Flexibility to adapt working hours to the situation required.
