The University of Virginia (UVA) invites applications for the position of Associate Director of Operations for Maintenance. Reporting to Facilities Management’s Director of Operations, this individual will provide leadership and strategic direction for approximately 150 professionals and skilled trades staff that operate and maintain facilities for UVA Operations. Facilities support is provided 24/7 to an asset portfolio of ten million square feet of academic, residential, athletic, laboratory, and administrative buildings.This position leads UVA’s academic maintenance zones, which provide service to the majority of UVA’s non-healthcare properties. This includes the historic Academical Village, a UNESCO Heritage Site, performing arts and athletic venues, classrooms, labs, and administrative buildings across UVA’s academic operating units except the School of Medicine. The team provides support to iconic events like Final Exercises, Lighting of the Lawn, high profile visiting speakers, and emergency management operations.Academic zone maintenance teams operate within developed and approved budgets, scopes, and schedules as needed to meet University objectives. This position is responsible for approximately $25 million in annual expenditures.The successful candidate will be a recognized leader who is highly proficient in developing strategies, setting goals, allocating resources and providing innovative solutions to complex issues. They will possess strong leadership characteristics and have demonstrated success in motiving, inspiring, and developing cohesive teams with positive performance outcomes. Interfacing with a variety of colleagues, customers, and stakeholders, this individual must have exceptional writing, communication, interpersonal and organization skills.Key ResponsibilitiesLead a large team in providing outstanding facilities management support that enable teaching and research. All duties are performed independently and under the general guidance of the Director.Supervise a professional staff and skilled trades; this includes overseeing staffing plans and recruitment efforts, supporting training and development initiatives, and positively guiding performance and conduct management efforts.Exercise financial management responsibility for assigned budgets.Build upon and reinforce the Facilities Management culture of continuous improvement.Build trusting and collaborative partnerships across the UVA community and beyond.Build a safe work environment through education, assessment, and the demonstrated observance of sound safety practices.In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.Candidate Profile:The successful candidate possesses a demonstrated record of creative, inspiring, and accomplished leadership in complex environments with the highest level of commitment to advancing the organization’s goals.Anticipated Compensation: $155,000 – $170,000 annually; commensurate with qualifications and experience.Qualifications:Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Business or related discipline is strongly preferred. Master’s Degree in Engineering or MBA preferred.Experience: Minimum of 7 years of direct experience in facilities management, including knowledge of facilities planning, design, procurement, construction, operations and maintenance is preferred.Extensive experience managing large, complex facilities operations, including knowledge of occupant needs, life safety, ADA and environmental codes is required. Preference given to candidates with experience in an academic environment.Demonstrated understanding of customer service and change management required, including fostering intradepartmental and interdepartmental cooperation and support.Licensure: APPA CEFP credential preferred, as is LEED credentialing.UVA Facilities Management:Facilities Management supports the University of Virginia’s wide range of research, academic and patient care programs.
