Offer Description

Duties

The candidate is expected to conduct research at an internationally high level, publish in internationally high-impact journals, actively seek research funding, collaborate with colleagues at the department and international counterparts, as well as supervise doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers. Teaching and development of research and undergraduate courses, performance of administrative tasks, and engagement in outreach activities may also be included in the duties, if required by the department.

Eligibility requirements

According to Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a person shall be qualified for appointment as Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor if he or she within an area has demonstrated educational expertise and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regard to the subject area of the appointment.

The doctoral degree should be in the field of physics, chemistry, materials science, or another relevant discipline. Documented experience in teaching at both undergraduate and advanced levels is a requirement. Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is a requirement.

Assessment criteria and their weight

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor/senior lecturer shall be the degree of the expertise required as a qualification for employment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of scientific expertise.

The primary basis for assessment in the employment shall be the degree of scientific proficiency. Secondarily, the degree of pedagogical proficiency shall be considered. Finally, leadership ability, administrative proficiency, collaboration with the surrounding society, and other relevant skills considering the subject matter of the employment and the tasks included in the position shall be taken into account.

Scientific expertise

Scientific expertise shall be demonstrated through independent scientific productivity. The criteria for assessment are:

  • breadth and depth of research – quality and scope
  • originality of research
  • productivity
  • contributions to the international research community
  • assignments within the research community
  • the ability to competitively obtain external research funding
  • collaboration with the surrounding society

The scientific expertise pertains to the field of physics or chemistry with a focus on organic electronics and materials science. The applicant must have a good understanding of organic light-emitting devices such as light-emitting electrochemical cells, specifically the design, synthesis, and characterization of materials used in such devices. Documented expertise in the development of light-emitting electrochemical cells, and synthesis methods relevant to green chemistry-based techniques and methods for the realization of luminescent and metal-free nanomaterials are particularly meritorious. Knowledge of applications in sustainable and environmentally friendly light-emitting systems is also considered a merit. The field is clearly interdisciplinary, and competence in areas bordering on chemistry, physical chemistry, and organic electronics is meritorious. The level of scientific proficiency should primarily be assessed based on scientific works published in internationally reputable scientific journals employing a peer-review system.

Pedagogical expertise

The pedagogical expertise for employment as associate professor should be demonstrated by documented experience of teaching with scientific foundation at university level. The criteria for evaluation are:

  • an ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching and an ability to supervise and examine students at every level of education
  • an ability to vary teaching methods and examination formats in relation to anticipated study results and the nature of the subject
  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding society in planning and implementation of education
  • participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources
  • a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own role as a teacher

The pedagogical expertise for employment as associate professor shall be demonstrated by documented teaching experience and capacity with scientific foundation at the university level. The teaching expertise shall relate to the subject area of experimental physics, with examples of relevant course topics for the position being Advanced Materials, Solar Cells, Sustainable Synthesis and Processing of Semiconductors, Organic Electronics, and Physical Measurement Techniques. Demonstrated experience with teaching such courses at the university level, and documented approved pedagogical courses for university teachers, are considered meritorious. The ability to teach in Swedish within two years of the start of the employment is also considered meritorious.

Pedagogical expertise can be attained through education in university pedagogy, other education of relevance for teaching at a university level or documented and proven experience teaching at the university level.

Further qualifications

A general basis for assessment for all teaching categories is both good cooperative skills and the expertise and suitability in general required to complete the work duties satisfactorily.

Administrative expertise shall refer to the ability to develop and lead activities and staff at the university, the ability to create collaboration between the university and industry, and collaboration with international and interdisciplinary partners, and the ability to inform about research and development work. The ability to collaborate with the surrounding society shall be assessed based on the applicant’s documented experience of collaboration with the business community and other actors.
