Job Description:Organisation: Leicestershire County CouncilWork Location: County Hall, Glenfield, Leicestershire LE3 8RAWorker Category: Hybrid WorkerSalary: £34,350 – £37,950 per annum (pro-rata for part-time)Working Hours: 37 hours per weekContract Type: PermanentClosing Date: 30th March 2025Interview Date(s): 10th & 11th April 2025About the RoleThe Attendance Team caseworker works with schools, parents/carers and other agencies to ensure every child of compulsory school age receives an education appropriate to their age ability, aptitude and any special needs they may have. They meet with schools throughout the county in person or virtually to conduct Targeted Support Meetings in relation to school attendance. They also identify, discuss and agree joint targeted actions in the meetings with schools for pupils who are persistently or severely absent and those at risk of becoming so to improve their attendance. The caseworker will also be involved with the legal intervention process should prosecution of a parent become necessary. This will include initiating proceedings, monitoring and progressing the prosecution, preparing witness statements and attending the magistrates court to present the prosecution on behalf of the Local Authority.For information on our approach to the recruitment of ex-offenders, please see our .About YouTo apply for this post, you must:
- Knowledge and understanding of the education system in relation to school attendance including the Education act 1996, Leicestershire County Council’s Attendance Team Code of Conduct and Protocol and the current DfE guidance Working Together to Improve School Attendance.
- Ability to analyse, interpret and apply a degree of evaluative judgement with regard to a child and family’s circumstances, when determining whether a case should be prepared for prosecution, or referred to a support agency or other services or whether it continues to be monitored
- Experience and understanding of multi-agency working in or with schools, family help and social care
- Experience of working within a legal framework i.e. advising senior school management on legislation affecting school attendance
- Experience of working with families experiencing challenges.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people, using skills of diplomacy, assertiveness, conflict resolution, negotiation and persuasion as well as the ability to present information to a wider audience including school staff, other LA services and at the magistrate’s court.
- Ability to track, analyse and interpret local attendance data to devise a strategic approach to attendance that prioritises pupils, pupil cohorts and schools on which to provide support and focus its efforts on to unblock are wide barriers to attendance and devise solutions to address any issues arising from the data gathered with schools at Targeted Support meetings.
