GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site is a unique location with a varied and unexpected story. Located along I-80, and close to downtown Laramie, WTPSHS is the perfect place to spend your summer. You’ll learn new skills, gain work experience, and interact with visitors from all over the world. Enjoy easy access to the Snowy Range, Vedauwoo, and the many outdoor activities Wyoming has to offer.

WTPSHS is authorized to hire up to five seasonal positions for the summer of 2024. There are three different types of seasonal positions to be filled as part of this announcement. The actual length of employment and start dates depends on the type of job performed. Work hours vary from 20-40 hours per week. Seasonal positions require irregular duty
hours, including working weekends, holidays, and evenings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

Seasonal Visitor Services & Events:

  • Greet visitors and answer questions about the site, including interpretation and orientation of facilities. Provide information about local points of interest.
  • Handle monetary transactions, which include fee collection and gift shop sales.
  • Responsible for cash register reconciliation and end-of-day transaction reports under the supervision of the Visitor Services Manager.
  • Restock gift shop shelves and assist with inventory tracking.
  • Answer a multi-line telephone system transferring calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Perform opening and closing duties, as well as janitorial and cleaning daily.
  • Schedule and monitor site rentals. Including site visit tours for potential rental groups.
  • Participate in and help coordinate onsite programs and events.
  • Assist with general administrative duties.
  • Must work independently. Follow established procedures and specific directions and instructions.
  • Must present a professional appearance and friendly manner at all times.
  • Assist all of the Laramie District sites with special projects and events.

Seasonal Maintenance Worker:

  • Clean and service restrooms, shelters, and buildings, and remove trash from buildings, grounds, parking lots, and other public areas.
  • Assist staff in the maintenance, renovation of grounds and buildings, and preventive maintenance.
  • Operate and/or drive various vehicles, and light equipment.
  • Operate various maintenance equipment, such as mowers, weed eaters, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, and other equipment required in daily operations.
  • Utilize various hand and power tools.
  • Follow proper handling and safety procedures involving cleaning chemicals and fuel products encountered in daily operations, including proper Personal Protective Equipment usage.
  • Must work independently and follow established procedures and specific directions and instructions.
  • Provide excellent customer service. May interact with the visiting public answering basic questions.
  • Assist all Laramie District sites with special projects and events.

Seasonal Interpretation Specialist:

  • Help visitors understand and appreciate the historic site’s significance. Have an interest in American History and enjoy meeting, talking, and sharing information with all historic site visitors.
  • Provide directions and other pertinent information to all visitors.
  • Explain safety, rules, and regulations to visitors to protect and preserve sites’ natural, historical, and cultural features.
  • Present interpretive programs such as tours and presentations that explain the natural and human history related to the historic site.
  • Lead group tours and school tours on a regular basis.
  • Make brooms while interacting with visitors in the historic broom factory. Training provided.
  • Assist in the care and cleaning of interpretive facilities, exhibits, and special natural or cultural features of sites.
  • Assist with research as needed for interpretive programs.
  • Assist with special projects in collections and archives as needed.
  • Must work independently.
  • Follow established procedures and specific directions and instructions.
  • Must present a professional appearance and friendly manner while providing excellent customer service.
  • Assist all of the Laramie District sites with special projects and events.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

For all seasonal positions, preference will be given to applicants who are professional while providing excellent customer service.

For the interpreter position, preference may be given to applicants who are attending or have attended a college or university with at least a freshman standing and majoring in any of the natural sciences, history, cultural resource management, or interpretative services or work experience as an interpreter with an organization that has natural or cultural resource responsibilities.

**Must have a valid driver’s license.
**Must be at least 16 years of age.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Ability to manage and complete multiple projects with variable timelines and scopes of work
  • Ability to be accurate and thorough in completing assignments/tasks on time
  • Must possess excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with visitors from around the world
  • Skill in handling money, cash registers, and retail sales
  • Basic maintenance knowledge
  • Basic operational knowledge of light equipment use, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Basic safety awareness of equipment use
  • Must present a professional appearance at all times
  • A strong knowledge and understanding of American and Wyoming history
  • Ability to acquire the necessary additional knowledge to give accurate, informative, and engaging tours
  • Excellent communication/public speaking skills

Necessary Special Requirements

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, with or without assistance.
