DescriptionJoin the City of Durango as a Backflow Administrator and help protect the sustainability of our water systems. In this role, you will perform both routine and technical work, ensuring compliance with state and local ordinances through proactive outreach, education, and enforcement.You’ll conduct inspections and tests within our water distribution system, identifying and mitigating potential cross-connection issues. Strong communication skills and a dedication to community engagement are essential for maintaining compliance with municipal codes while collaborating with various departments, agencies, and the public.To support your growth, we’ll help you obtain your Backflow Prevention and Cross-Connection Control (BPCCC) certification through the American Public Works Association (APWA). Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity for a pay increase upon obtaining your American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE) and State of Colorado Tester and Surveyor certifications.Essential Job DutiesWhat You’ll Do in This Role:
- Conduct regular inspections and surveys of properties.
- Maintain detailed records of all inspections, surveys, and compliance measures undertaken.
- Perform testing and necessary repair of backflow prevention assemblies.
- Provide expert advice and respond to inquiries from commercial and residential property owners regarding backflow prevention.
- Engage in continuous learning through training sessions and maintain professional relationships with the State of Colorado and Cross-Connection Control Program (CCCP) agencies.
- Prepare and issue informal and formal warnings, notices of violation, consent agreements, and administrative orders to users in non-compliance with ordinances.
- Address public inquiries and collaborate with other departments and agencies for effective implementation of the City of Durango’s Backflow Prevention program.
- Operate a pickup truck, computer, tablet, and hand tools.
Minimum QualificationsYou Have:
- A high school diploma or GED.
- Two years of experience performing maintenance work, light construction, or a related field.
- Ability to maintain a valid driver’s license upon employment.
- Ability to obtain Backflow Prevention and Cross-Connection Control (BPCCC) certification within one year of being hired
- Knowledge of International Plumbing Code (IPC).
- Familiarity with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
- Proficiency in performing skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks.
- Skill in written and photographic record-keeping.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective public engagement and clear articulation of policies and procedures.
