What you will do
Working alongside other Banking and Payments Specialists (BPSs) covering the overnight operations, you provide collateral, payment and settlement services through the Canadian Depository for Securities (CDSX) and Canada’s Real Time Gross Settlement system (Lynx) to settle foreign exchange transactions on behalf of the Continuous Linked Settlement (CLS) Bank. Owing to the criticality of the operations, BPSs working the overnight shift must develop expertise in contingency procedures and participate in regular proprietary and system-wide testing. The Overnight Banking and Payments Specialist also provides a domestic payment and securities services for approximately 100 clients when overlapping shifts, including the Government of Canada, domestic financial institutions, other central banks and selected international institutions.
As an overnight BPS you will:
- Process, monitor, control and balance payments, settlement and securities transactions for clients to meet strict deadlines throughout the night
- Participate in the ongoing development and testing of contingency procedures related to overnight business activities
- Self-manage daily operations in accordance with critical operational deadlines. with increased responsibility resulting from minimal technical support and management supervision
- Analyze business processes, training and problem resolution
- Work in a team-based environment with a strong client focus
Please note that the ability to work onsite at least 50% of the time is a requirement due to the position being part of the Bank’s Critical Operations.
The work schedule for the Overnight Team consists of a 4-day work week. Candidates can expect four 10-hour shifts from 11pm to 9am (scheduled in consideration of daily operations). Staff working the overnight shift, outside of the Bank’s core hours of 7:00am to 6:00pm, are eligible for a shift premium of $2.00/hour.
The onboarding training period will last up to two weeks, and take place during daytime hours, before you commence the overnight shift.
What you need to succeed
- Knowledge of banking operations, contingency measures, business continuity and disaster recovery plans
- General understanding of accounting principles
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to gather and resolve discrepancies in information
- Ability to multi-task and make sound decisions and recommendations
- Proven ability to coordinate work and set priorities to ensure that production schedules and deadlines are met
- Ability to work independently or in a team environment with minimum supervision
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Nice-to-have
- Night shift experience
- Good knowledge of Canada’s financial systems, including the ACSS, Lynx and CDSX
- Familiarity with an operational work environment and computerized applications such as Microsoft products (Word, Excel)
Your education and experience
This position requires:
- a bachelor’s degree in commerce or business and a minimum of one year of relevant work experience processing payments and securities transactions for clients
or
- relevant college diploma (e.g., accounting, administration) and a minimum of two years of relevant work experience processing payments and securities transactions for clients
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

- Language requirement: English and French essential (bilingual) with a minimum starting level of functional (level 4) in second official language. Training may be provided to help reach the required level of fully functional (level 5) in second official language.

- Salaries are based on qualifications and experience and typically range from $69,300 to $81,530 (job grade 14)
- Depending on performance, you may be eligible for performance pay. The first tier of performance pay is for successfully meeting expectation, at 5 to 7% of your base salary. The Bank offers performance pay for those who exceed expectations (10% of your base salary).. Exceptional performers who far exceed expectations may be eligible for higher performance pay.
