Position Profile: Board Member-at-Large (Alberta, Canada)Reports to: CCSA Board MembersThe Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) changes lives by bringing people and knowledge together to reduce the harms of alcohol and other drugs on society. We partner with public, private and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to improve the health and safety of people living in Canada. An NGO with a national focus, CCSA envisions a healthier Canadian society where evidence transforms approaches to substance use.CCSA acknowledges that First Nations, Métis and Inuit people are the holders of Traditional Indigenous Knowledge. We respect the power of the Indigenous ways of knowing and of Traditional Indigenous Knowledge and commit to learning about and incorporating this knowledge into our work with proper guidance.A volunteer governs the Centre. The CCSA Board of Directors is composed of 13 members. The Chair and up to four other directors are appointed by the Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Federal Minister of Health. Other directors, known as members-at-large, are selected and appointed by the CCSA Board itself. They are recruited from several sectors and represent a broad cross-section of geographic areas, interests, experience and expertise.The CCSA Board of Directors is seeking applications to fill a member-at-large vacancy from Alberta.Board members-at-large typically serve for a three-year term. They can be reappointed for up to two more terms. The Board meets for two days three to four times a year in Ottawa, virtually or in another city in Canada. Each Board member is expected to serve on at least one committee, with committees usually meeting before each Board meeting.Responsibilities and AccountabilitiesThe ideal candidate is from an equity-deserving group, which includes those with lived or living experience with substance use and health. In general, the Board seeks to have its overall membership reflect the communities we serve by selecting members from:

  • Different regions of Canada
  • Sectors having a role in substance use and addiction (e.g., business, not-for-profit, government)
  • Relevant fields of work (e.g., health, mental health, education, criminal justice, public safety)
  • Diverse expertise related to board governance (e.g., finance, human resources, government relations, law, risk management)

QualificationsThe CCSA Board is recruiting applicants in the province of Alberta with the following skillsets:

  • A Chartered Professional Accountant designation (required)
  • Financial management expertise (required)
  • Governance expertise through having served on one or more boards of directors (required)
  • Experience working in or with government relations and public relations (required)
