Position Summary | The Botany Technician will work within the CNHP Botany/Vegetation Ecology Team to provide support on all aspects of team projects in Colorado and surrounding western states. This includes pre-field season logistics and planning, securing permission to access survey sites on public and private land, preparing field maps in ArcGIS and Field Maps, preparing Survey123 forms, and preparing field supplies. Work during the summer field season will involve actively collecting field data and/or native plant materials and acting as a crew lead in the field. The field work involves weed mapping and applying weed treatments, native seed collection, vegetation inventories, vegetation plot data collection, restoration research data collection and restoration project implementation, rare plant monitoring and surveys. This work will require using GPS units or tablets, topographic maps and/or navigation apps, driving to and from field sites and navigating to desired plant populations via paved roads, dirt roads, hiking trails, and off-trail travel through dense vegetation and across long distances. Data to be included for collection includes surrounding vegetation, plant population abundance, species identification, plant phenology, and/or habitat assessment, with attention to detail, and following set protocols. This position requires extensive travel and long days in the field. Post-field activities include quality control of field collected data, identifying collected plant specimens, entering field data, or working with interns and work studies to enter data, compiling data into CNHP field forms, analyzing data, the creation of geospatial data products, and report writing. Wrap-up may also entail processing collected native seed and herbarium specimens. The Botany Technician will assist with proposal writing, temporary field staff hiring, field trainings, project reporting, and supporting other project tasks as needed with supervision. This position is supervised by the CNHP Botany/Vegetation Ecology Team Lead. This staff person will have basic knowledge of weed species identification, knowledge of data collection equipment and methodology, and how to use a dichotomous key to determine plant species identification.
