About the role

Working with the Head of Business Development, in this role you will be supporting and undertaking key tasks for business engagement. You will be working with employers across all sectors in order to grow our provision. You will establish and maintain new and existing business leads, and work with employers to design delivery models and establish delivery options via a holistic approach to education and training needs, utilising an Organisational Needs Analysis. You will also support the agreement of contracts with employers, ensuring that we maximise on any business opportunity.

This role is responsible in working with the University of Derby including colleges within the University, Buxton and Leek College, and the External Project Team to deliver outstanding outcomes for the University and organisations it works with. Our business engagement offering and customer service must also reflect our own values and behaviours, supported by continual monitoring in order to improve upon all aspects of engaging with organisations.

Principal accountabilities

  • Support research and market analysis, including client profiling, sourcing trend setters and high growth potential business opportunities, and contacts.
  • To take full responsibility for the delivery of the agreed personal sales targets in terms of overall sales and profit.
  • Work in conjunction with other Business Development staff both within the immediate team and the wider University to develop and implement innovative sales strategies and plans, and support the further market penetration and/or diversification of market/products in order to enhance our offering.
  • Prepare and present fully costed proposals to clients, negotiating contracts to ensure that each contract will generate the required financial return.
  • Develop and maintain business relationships with potential partners and introducers/multipliers, as well as excellent working relationships with colleagues across the University.
  • Sharing best practice with colleagues, plan and prepare compelling approaches and pitches.
  • Support and promote both the University staff and employers to understand the full offering from the University, including understanding funding rules and conditions, and how effective engagement can enhance outcomes for both parties.
  • Pro-actively develop and maintain networking links to take full advantage of local, regional and national initiatives and events.
  • Support the raising of the University’s corporate profile in various industry groups, through personal networking, attendance at events, liaison with key industry partners, with a view to generating business and enhancing the University’s reputation.
  • Monitoring

  • Track all business development and pipeline for opportunities, understand the impact on success rates, in order to ensure that reports are produced as required.
  • Track and record activity on live accounts, including prior to contract, to help close negotiations and meet targets.
  • Ensure all employer data is entered accurately and updated onto the CRM system, ensuring updates can be reported on to aid client management and business planning.
  • To contribute to local labour market intelligence and sector information that can be used to influence current and future provision.
  • Keep abreast of policy changes and government requirements.

    Essential Criteria
    Qualifications

    • Relevant undergraduate degree (or equivalent qualification) or comparable knowledge gained through professional experience
    • Sales and Marketing Management qualification (or equivalent commercial experience)

    Experience

    • Proven track record of achievement in business to business sales and marketing
    • Proven track record of supporting selling in the education and training sector, private or public)
    • Experience of preparing and implementing business development plans and sales strategies

    Skills, knowledge and abilities

    • Building and maintaining client relationships
    • Commercial awareness and business acumen
    • Good proposal and presentation skills
    • Good interpersonal and networking skills
    • IT literate, including use of CRM and MS Office Suite
    • Creative and innovative
    • Ability to be self-motivated, as well as work as part of a team
    • Ability to work to tight deadlines
    • Able to manage clients and work in a fast moving environment

    Business Requirements

    • Flexibility in hours worked and for regular travel within the UK and occasionally abroad
    • Willingness and flexibility to travel and work between University and external sites in a cost effective and timely manner.

    Desirable Criteria
    Qualifications

    • Postgraduate qualification in relevant field

    Experience

    • Negotiating skills and ability to secure new business contracts
    • Some knowledge of apprenticeship delivery, funding and compliance.
    • Some knowledge of QAA, HEFCE, IfA and Ofsted.
