Turnover by 2021 for the British Council is expected to be close to £1.5 billion including the UK Government grant. The Council is embarking on ambitious plans for transformation over the next few years that will ensure financial sustainability and growth in commercial operations.You will report to the Director FP&A Professional Services and Transformation and will provide financial support and business partnering across Professional Services and the British Councils Transformation programme.You will support business teams in their financial and operational plans for transformation through to implementation, ensuring financials are clear and correctly linked to strategic and operational plans; and will own the financial models that sit behind this. You will establish financial guidance/targets and core assumptions for planning and reporting and provide analysis and insights as required.This is an exciting role for anyone looking to gain an oversight of the British Council and to support a major transformation programme.Main Accountabilities/Responsibilities but not limited to the following:
- Support the Director Professional Services and Transformation in the development/ongoing maintenance of a comprehensive 5yr financial model for Professional Services in conjunction with SBU, regions, functional leads and other key stakeholders across the business as applicable. This should incorporate but not be limited to:
- Development of business models/cases to support transformation of each workstream.
- Modelling of efficiency/benefits profiles and the level of investment required to deliver these
- Improved approach to allocation of Professional services to report functional profitability across a 3-5 year period
- Generation of cash flow assumptions for business cases.
- Support the Transformation team and relevant business leads in preparing clear and precise business cases that correctly set out the financial and commercial case for each investment area. This should include consideration of relevant tax and status issues.
- Monitor and report on delivery against implementation plans and in particular the measurement of benefits. Develop robust approaches to the measurement of benefits ensuring these are transparent and aligned across the business.
- Support the Director in providing high quality reports to SLT, Board of Trustees and HMG stakeholders as required.
- Review approach to financial reporting for Professional Services and make recommendations and implement alternative data structures and approaches to improve transparency and global reporting of these areas.
- Provide analyses and insights to support commercial decision-making and so reference for example market, competitor, and customer information.
Role Specific Knowledge and Experience:Minimum/Essential
- CCAB qualified accountant.
- Proven senior professional experience in an equivalent position within a complex matrix organisation.
- Operating in international and multi-cultural organisations
- Appraisal of investment projects
- Managing and developing teams
- Financial Planning & monitoring including management information reporting
- Strong report writing and presentation skills to board level audiences.
Desirable
- Shared Services Operations
- Development and optimisation of SAP accounting and planning applications
- What constitutes best practice in the upper quartile of finance functions
- Leadership of change projects/initiatives
- Strong commercial finance experience gained in an organisation undergoing change and driving for growth
