The Community Engagement Assistant’s primary role involves fostering positive relationships with refugees, creating effective mechanisms for community participation, enabling refugees to actively engage in camp life, and contributing to the establishment of a robust information sharing and accountability system, including CFRM. This encompasses maintaining open communication through various channels to ensure accountability towards the affected populations. This role reports to the CCCM Team Leader and collaborates closely with the Protection team and Code of Conduct unit.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Responsibilities will include, but not necessarily be limited, to the following:

  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with refugees, community representatives, and stakeholders; establish and assist representative committees and community groups, overseeing their formation, meetings, workshops, and training.
  • Keep precise records and generate reports on program activities, including monitoring camp-level services; collaborate with the CCCM Project Manager and Team Leader to identify key information gaps and create suitable communication materials like posters, leaflets, banners, and audio messages.
  • Efficiently deliver communication messages to affected population via various community groups, collect and relay feedback to relevant service providers, and raise awareness about the Info Hub and CFRM Mechanism in the community.
  • Assist CFRM enumerator in addressing complaints and providing information when CFRM Officer is absent, guiding beneficiaries appropriately based on complaint nature.
  • Ensure DRC beneficiaries have access to accountability informational materials including leaflets, cards, signs and others.
  • Ensure broad dissemination of communication materials and messages from the CwC working group and other stakeholders within the community; collaborate with Cyclone Preparedness Program camp volunteers to ensure timely distribution of early warning messages to the entire population; arrange Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with various community groups to uncover critical needs and gaps, subsequently reporting findings to the Camp Manager and CCCM TL.
  • Supporting SMS Officer in the activities that empower and guide community groups to lead in activities and representative committees, such as cultural events and community-led projects; involve these groups in camp coordination through meetings with service providers, facilitating concern sharing and solution suggestions, and establishing connections with other camp actors to ensure widespread information sharing among all community groups.
  • Supporting Camp Manager/TL in developing the Terms of Reference with the different committees and guiding them to ensure they effectively represent the community and prioritize their needs.
  • Ensure the camp committees are engaged with the community groups to discuss community-level issues and ensure the representation of different groups in prioritizing interventions in the community.
  • Related tasks as requested by the line manager.

Safety:

  • Comply with all global and location-specific safety rules, policies, and procedures. Report safety incidents, near-misses and other relevant information to the safety team as shall be briefed during onboarding. Failure to adhere to these is a disciplinary offence while it may also leave the position holder, their colleagues and DRC Bangladesh, at risk.

Skills And Experiences:

  • 1-year professional work experience in any community engagement related field.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish effective working relations with local staff and other stakeholders.
  • Open and positive attitude.
  • Genuine care and respect for the needs of others, practically vulnerable populations with strong belief in empowering marginalized and disenfranchised people. 
  • High integrity and willingness to conduct herhimself transparently and open to scrutiny.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work under pressure, with minimal supervision, and in a culturally diverse team.

Educational Qualifications:

  • University or graduate degree in relevant field.

Languages :

  • Fluent in spoken English and good writing/reporting skills in English.
  • Bengali (Fluent)
  • Chittagonian (Required)
