The Capital Solutions Intern will engage closely with the technical program teams and Capital Solutions leadership to contribute to the design and implementation of impact-linked initiatives, including impact capital, catalytic capital, and credit support. The intern will help contribute by benchmarking the organization’s designs, adding technical and theoretical perspectives to Opportunity’s designs, and actively participating in the execution and delivery of the initiatives with investors and Financial Institution partners. The internship provides an excellent opportunity to get hands-on experience in development finance through the lenses of a mission-driven, impact-first NGO with a track record of seamless execution and optimal delivery of best-in-class impact-linked financial solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct technical financial analysis of the current and prospective initiatives of the Capital Solutions unit, including building financial projections, returns analysis, profitability analysis, etc.
  • Create benchmarking/competitive analysis of impact investing initiatives by peers, including identifying sector-specific and cross-cutting thematic opportunities from players in the impact investing field.
  • Assist with implementing the impact investing and credit support initiatives, including conducting background research, formatting and packaging deliverables, coordinating team inputs, program management, and managing communications.
  • Help prepare marketing materials, including capability statements, project summaries, and investor or partner-friendly presentations.
  • Verify theory of change by contributing to understanding the impact methodologies at Opportunity to.
  • Collaborate with other departments and field offices to gather relevant information and data.
  • Support internal business development activities, including updating databases and other information platforms as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be enrolled in a credited college graduate or undergraduate program.
  • Must be seeking a degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Public Administration, International Finance / Development, or related fields.
  • Evidence of successful completion of studies in corporate finance and accounting.
  • Any experience or involvement with impact investors (regardless of size or sector) or development finance institutions is preferred.
  • Experience in the middle/front office of the financial services sector or investment management is preferred.
  • Interest in the financial services sector/investment management will be evaluated by extracurricular activities, internships, etc., on a case-by-case basis.
  • An understanding of and a commitment to advancing the mission and core values of Opportunity International.

CAPSTONE PROJECT
The final capstone project will be identified and finalized in the first 3 weeks of the internship. Examples of potential capstone projects include 1) strategic analysis of a blended capital investment vehicle geared towards one of Opportunity’s target sectors; 2) developing of an equity investments framework including qualitative and quantitative assessments of micro-finance investment worthiness, 3) developing a case for Opportunity International as a manager of impact capital over the years, evaluating merits, considerations, and returns of our investment activities over the years. The capstone project will be adjusted to fit the intern’s background/expertise with the unit’s business needs.
