About the Role: 

The primary purpose of the Aquaculture Technician is to provide day-to-day care and feeding for all animals within the Deakin Aquaculture Futures Facility (DAFF) – Warrnambool Campus under the guidance of the Technical Manager Aquaculture. The position provides assistance to ensure the well-being of the animals and the validity of scientific work are maintained.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • An equivalent combination of training and experience, or a post-secondary qualification in Aquaculture or a relevant discipline, including Laboratory Animal Studies.
  • Demonstrated experience in animal care.
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to produce clear and accurate communications appropriate for their intended audience.
  • Proven capability to work positively and effectively as part of a collaborative work team, to accommodate and work well with different working styles, and to work independently where required.
  • Ability to work on weekends, university, and public holidays as required.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately record, collect, and collate data (desirable).
  • Demonstrated ability to understand components of disease and health status, with the ability to recognize signs or symptoms of disease and ill health (desirable).

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide support in aquatic animal husbandry and technology, conduct sanitisation, plant maintenance, water quality monitoring, and other care-related activities for animals as directed.
  • Feed animals daily in accordance with all feeding protocols.
  • Under guidance, oversee the well-being of animals by conducting daily observations to assess their health, ecological conditions, and social environment. Ensure the provision of clean food, water, and an enriched environment on a daily basis.
  • Under guidance, record animal history and any other necessary data as required.
  • Under guidance, assist in ensuring that the care and use of animals are ethically sound and documented in accordance with the University Animal Ethics Committees and the Department of Jobs, Precincts, and Regions (DJPR).
  • Under guidance, assist in ensuring all work is carried out within the relevant regulations of the Office of Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) and the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR).
  • Perform any other duties as directed, commensurate with the scope and classification of the position.

Additional Comments:

  • Primarily work outside regular business hours, such as participating in weekend, university, and public holiday rosters, filling in for staff leave during the week, and being available for on-call work.
  • The role requires the incumbent to apply for and maintain a Working with Children Check.
  • Fork Lift Licence (desirable)
