Casual Learning Facilitator – The D-Day Story

Salary: approximately £14 per hour.

Hours: This is a casual post – there are no set hours – you will be asked to work as and when needed.

2024 marks the 80^th anniversary of D-Day and The D-Day Story is planning an ambitious and engaging programme of events and activities including the expansion of the museum’s formal education programme.

The D-Day Story is the only UK museum dedicated to telling the events of 6^th June 1944 using objects, interactives and video from the perspectives and accounts of those who were there. Divided into three distinct parts the museum includes LCT 7074, the last surviving landing craft tank which carried ten tanks to Normandy on D-Day and the impressive Overlord Embroidery.

The current focus of the museum’s education programme is the Key Stage 2 history workshops ‘Life in Second World War Britain’. Workshops are delivered in the museum engaging pupils through the use of artefacts, archives, dressing-up and role play.

Within this casual role you will primarily be responsible for delivering formal learning workshop to pre-booked school groups. The post-holder(s) will therefore be required to work during school term times. The number of days and hours will vary according to the number of school bookings. A typical day is 09.00 until 14.30 although specific timings will depend on the number of classes attending each day. However the service is looking to expand the informal events programme to include weekends and summer holidays.

This role will deliver high quality learning experiences using the resources and session plans provided. You will adapt your delivery as necessary and use questions and answer skills to facilitate participation and learning. In addition you will respond promptly to queries from other members of staff and ensure good standards of customer care and deal appropriately with any comments from customers or colleagues.

What you’ll need to succeed

A team player who is flexible and able to adapt your delivery according to the needs of the groups booking the sessions. You will have a good general level of education. It is essential that you have at lease GCSE/or equivalent in maths and English. Further qualifications in history or a demonstrable interest in World War II are desirable. You will have good experience of working with and teaching children as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
