The Cellular Pathology Operational Lead Scientist manages a comprehensive range of scientific services within histopathology and diagnostic cytology, liaising with the Cellular Pathology Lead Scientist (Service Lead), quality team and consultants as required. They lead the Cellular Pathology service and have responsibility for the operational service delivery and regulatory compliance in histopathology and diagnostic cytology.The department is committed to training and development of the team and under the leadership ensure that the department continues to provide these opportunities and deliver a high quality, timely service.Main duties of the jobTo routinely manage and lead on the work of the Cellular Pathology services within NWAFT, processing and analysing samples in accordance with agreed standards as set by Pathology Accreditation (UKAS) and HTA under the strategic direction of the Cellular Pathology Lead Scientist.To manage staff and other resources within cellular pathology, participating in and having responsibility for the highly specialist, diagnostic technical service delivery. To liaise with hospital clinicians, general practitioners, other health care professionals, other Trust departments, external agencies, suppliers, and their agents and occasionally patients and their representatives.To liaise with the Cellular Pathology Lead Scientist in the overall management of the department to deliver of a timely and responsive diagnostic service to patients. - Highly developed specialist knowledge of histology and/or cytology practise underpinned by theoretical and practical experience
- Suitable acquired experience in a management/supervisory position in the laboratory discipline
- Evidence of the ability to maintain service standards despite fluctuating staff numbers and workloads
- To be experienced in quality and clinical audit, administration, management and development of histology service
- Ability to manage, motivate and train staff
- Evidence of understanding UKAS standards and assessment processes
- Awareness of current professional issues

- Experience of undertaking specimen dissection
- Experience of undertaking ROSE clinics and diagnostic cytology procedures

- Able to master complex facts, reach appropriate conclusions and formulate required/relevant responses
- Able to decide upon and implement policies and procedures within the constraints set by the laboratory, Trust and other regulating and professional bodies.
- Good practical knowledge of health and safety issues including COSHH, fire regulations and risks assessments.
- Literate in laboratory computerisation and PC office applications
- Able to develop and supervise departmental research activities
