POSITION DETAILS:

  • Reports To: Co-Executive Directors (two)

  • Location: Burlington, ON (CAN); Byron Center, MI (USA) office locations/hybrid preferred, with remote options considered

PURPOSE:

As the Chief Finance and Investment Officer (CFIO) you will help develop and communicate World Renew’s investment strategy and policies, contribute to business strategy, manage the investment portfolio of the organization, make decisions on asset allocation, and risk management across the portfolio. This role will also be primarily responsible for developing and implementing financial strategies, budgets, and forecasts on a global scale while maintaining the highest regulatory and audit standards, leading a team of professionals based in different geographies. The CFIO will ensure World Renew’s financial sustainability and guide decision-making through accurate projections and insightful analyses. Collaborating closely with the executive leadership team and the Boards of Directors (US & Canada), this role is pivotal in driving the organization’s growth and impact.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Portfolio Growth and Management

  • Reviewing the existing portfolio and identifying strengths and weaknesses.
  • Identifying financial risks and devising plans for mitigating them.
  • Researching investment opportunities and creating an investment strategy with recommendations (with detailed justification/explanation) that matches the company’s strategic goals.
  • Analyzing World Renew’s financial statements and reports and modifying the investment strategy based on the data.
  • Compiling and presenting regular reports on investment performance.
  • Staying up to date on market forecasts and trends.

Global Financial Forecasting and Budgeting:

  • Lead the development of comprehensive financial forecasts and budgets for World Renew’s global operations.
  • Utilize historical data, trends, and other relevant factors to create accurate and realistic financial projections.
  • Continuously monitor actual financial performance against forecasts and budgets, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
  • Understand and analyze the economic conditions in various countries and regions where the organization operates or intends to expand.
  • Consider the potential impact of currency exchange rate fluctuations on the organization’s financial planning.

Financial Planning and Strategy:

  • Collaborate with executive leadership to formulate long-term financial strategies aligned with World Renew’s mission and goals.
  • Provide insights and data-driven recommendations to support strategic decision-making, resource allocation, and expansion plans.
  • Assess the financial feasibility of new projects and initiatives, conducting cost-benefit analyses and risk assessments.

Leadership and Team Management:

  • As part of the Global Executive Team, the CFIO inspires and guides their team, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment and a unified global vision. Their leadership skills synergize efforts with other functional areas and contribute to a motivated and high-performing finance organization and growing future leaders.

Internal Controls and Audits:

  • Assessing the adequacy and effectiveness of the organization’s internal financial controls in a global context.
  • Review policies, procedures, and processes to ensure they safeguard assets, promote operational efficiency, and maintain compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Develop a global risk-based internal and external audit plan that outlines the scope, objectives, and timelines to maintain industry leading financial audit practices.

Resource Allocation and Optimization:

  • Collaborate with executive leadership to analyze and allocate financial resources effectively across different programs, projects, and geographical locations to maximize impact.
  • Identify opportunities for cost optimization without compromising program quality and effectiveness.

Scenario Analysis and Risk Assessment:

  • Conduct scenario analyses to assess the potential financial impact of various internal and external factors on World Renew’s operations.
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks through proactive planning and risk management strategies.
  • Stay up to date with local and international regulations that affect financial reporting, taxation, and compliance.

Grant and Funding Management:

  • Oversee the financial aspects of grants and funding received from donors, ensuring accurate allocation and utilization of resources.
  • Coordinate with program leaders and fundraising teams to align financial planning with grant requirements.

Reporting and Communication:

  • Prepare and present financial forecasts, budgets, and planning reports to the executive leadership team and the Board of Directors.
  • Communicate complex financial concepts and analyses in a clear and concise manner to non-financial stakeholders.

Technology and Process Improvement:

  • Evaluate and implement financial software and systems to streamline forecasting, planning, and reporting processes.
  • Continuously improve financial models and methodologies to enhance forecasting accuracy and efficiency.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position will oversee all finance directors and senior leaders.

  • Knowledge of grant management, donor funding mechanisms, and compliance in the non-profit sector.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide strategic insights.
  • Proficiency in financial software, ERP systems, and advanced Excel skills.
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal), presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and build relationships with donors and partners.
  • Ethical values and commitment to transparency and accountability.
  • Be a great listener and have a heart for justice and mercy.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • A master’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related fields is required. Relevant international financial professional certifications are highly desirable.
  • 5+ years’ experience as a CFO or in a senior financial leadership role, with a focus on global forecasting and planning, preferably in the non-profit sector or an NGO with global operations.
  • 5+ years’ experience overseeing internal audit functions in a global setting.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Must be highly fluent in English, with degree of professional acumen required to execute job accountabilities. Fluency in additional languages would be advantageous.
  • Ability to operate across a range of linguistic groups.

  • Requires travel within North America for meetings and conferences, as needed.
