ABOUT SDSNThe has been operating since 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. SDSN mobilizes global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development, including the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. We aim to accelerate joint learning and promote integrated approaches that address the interconnected economic, social, and environmental challenges confronting the world.SDSN works closely with United Nations agencies, multilateral financing institutions, the private sector, and civil society. It is directed by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs and operates through offices in New York, Paris, and Kuala Lumpur.BASIC FUNCTIONReporting to the VP of the Americas & Head of the New York office, Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Secretariat, the Chief of Staff will support the strategic goals of the SDSN. The Chief of Staff will report directly to the Head of the New York Office and will be responsible for making the New York Office function effectively. He/she will partner closely with the Head of the New York Office on a daily basis and provide support in managing the execution of projects and tasks across all SDSN’s operations, including day-to-day management, special initiatives, and oversight of deadlines.S/he will manage staff (permanent and temporary, full and part time), represent the SDSN at meetings and events, support in managing strategic partnerships, contribute to SDSN publications and deliverables, and manage project budgets. S/he will prepare and contribute to the preparation of correspondence, reports, briefings, and presentations on strategic initiatives as appropriate. The incumbent will participate in policy fora, liaise with government and private sector representatives, and engage stakeholders with the goal of forming solid coalitions to achieve SDSN’s strategic goals.S/he will serve as a confidential resource and liaison for the Head of the New York Office regarding developing issues and concerns, manage sensitive issues, and exhibit a high degree of discretion and confidentiality.S/he will serve as resource mobilization specialist and will develop, manage, coordinate, network, implement, and monitor bespoke resource mobilization strategies with associated tasks, products,S/he will collaborate on an ongoing basis with partners, donors, and internal and public audiences, with the objective of fundraising, promoting awareness, understanding and supporting the program activities.S/he will support in the development of fundraising materials (brochures, proposals, concept notes); the preparation of a database of contacts and funders and administrative functions relating to the efficient receipt of funds and compliance with donor requirements.The Chief of Staff will lead the organization of the International Conference on Sustainable Development, which takes place annually each September, including oversight of event staff.Responsible for all additional assignments deemed appropriate by SDSN Leadership.CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Fundraising: Advise SDSN projects and teams on fundraising. This will include approaching donors, managing donor relationships, developing fundraising materials and reviewing materials developed by others, and tracking SDSN fundraising activities. This also includes oversight of donor reporting requirements and coordination with the Finance & Operations team on donor compliance. – 40 % of total job
  • Strategic Projects: Support strategic SDSN projects led by the NY Office, including but the Science Panel for the Amazon. This will include oversight of staff, managing budgets, leading the implementation of projects, organizing events, and representing the SDSN at meetings and conferences. – 20 % of total job
  • Oversee SDSN Events: This includes oversight of events alongside key global events such as HLPF and the UNGA. Lead the organization of the International Conference on Sustainable Development. This includes leading the abstract submission process, developing the program, coordinating invitations and high-level speakers, reserving catering/venue/& A/V, etc. – 15 % of total job
  • Support to the New York Office: Serve as a confidential resource and liaison for the Head of the New York Office. Support the Head of the New York Office in management of staff, management of budgets and administrative duties in the financial system, and management of new strategic projects. Participate in policy fora, liaise with diverse stakeholders and build solid coalitions to achieve SDSN’s strategic goals. – 20 % of total job
  • Other tasks assigned by the Head of the New York Office. – 5 % of total job

RESPONSIBILITY FOR BUDGET/ASSETSThe Chief of Staff will be responsible for any budget allocations associated with his/her networks or project budgetsQUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE

  • A Master’s degree is required, along with 10-15 years of relevant experience
  • The candidate must have a positive attitude and excellent communication skills, strong organization skills and attention to detail is required
  • The candidate must show competency for managing multiple responsibilities simultaneously
  • The candidate must have a high level of competency using Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • HTML and social media experience is a plus
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are knowledgeable and interested in the work of sustainable development, ideally with experience traveling, studying or working in developing countries.
  • Experience supporting the administrative and research needs of individuals working in nonprofit and/or academia, preferably with a focus on international development, is also highly desired.
  • A professional working style and the ability to work both independently and as a team player. Willingness to take initiative and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time. The ability to exercise discretion and handle confidential information is essential. Ability to work under pressure on competing responsibilities with resilience, discretion, and diplomacy

IMPORTANT INFORMATIONLocation: This position will be based in New York City, NY. SDSN also supports a hybrid work arrangement which your manager will discuss with the candidate.Travel: Requires domestic and/or international travel, subject to SDSN’s travel policy.Contract Length: This appointment is valid for a period of one year, subject to renewal upon review.Salary Range: $117,000 to $175,600Benefits: SDSN offers generous leave allowances and a flexible, hybrid work policy. In the absence of a Head of the New York office, the Chief of Staff will report to the President.
