Your Opportunity:We are currently looking for Full Time Clinical Assistant to join the Calgary Epilepsy Program team at the Foothills Medical Centre and South Health Campus located in Calgary, Alberta. Clinical Assistants are important members of the collaborative care team at Alberta Health Services (AHS) in Clinical Neurosciences functioning as mid-level providers under the supervision and direction of physician supervisor(s) to provide acute care coverage within our hospitals, making a difference in the lives of our patients and their families. Clinical Assistants are registered for supervised practice with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) under the Limited Practice Registry and provide clinical support under the direction of AHS Medical Staff. In this position you will deliver care to epilepsy patients at the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC) site within a multidisciplinary team in the Calgary Epilepsy Program, with cross coverage at the South Health Campus (SHC). The Clinical Assistant will provide acute inpatient Epilepsy service during the day weekdays and on one weekend a month. The Rocky Mountains with their serene beauty, provide ample opportunities to pursue winter and summer sports and leisure activities.Description:The clinical assistants (CA) work as a part of a multidisciplinary team of epilepsy specialists including epileptologists, epilepsy surgeons, nurses, EEG technologists, neuropsychologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, radiologists and nuclear medicine specialists. The responsibilities of the clinical assistants include but are not limited to: admission of patients, taking detailed history from the patient and if possible the family, performing a physical and neurological examination, obtaining relevant previous medical records and summarizing relevant information, consenting patients for diagnostic tests, discussing the patient with the consultant and team, documenting, ongoing patient care at the seizure monitoring unit, liaising with other team members including neurologists at FMC/SHC, ordering clinical investigations, arranging for consultations and following up on results, arranging appropriate follow-up investigations and clinic visit, support during epilepsy clinics as well as support with maintaining the various clinical and quality-improvement databases of the epilepsy program. You will be responsible for providing ongoing medical management for acute epilepsy patients under supervision of medical staff via daily rounds at FMC. You will be expected to attend weekly educational rounds, in addition to weekly multidisciplinary rounds. It is anticipated that once the probationary period is complete, the clinical assistant will directly manage a roster of 4-6 patients under the supervision of a staff epileptologist. Management of medical issues, longitudinal communication with families, and discharge planning will be critical skills for this position. – Appropriate supervision and support are provided and will begin with a rigorous formal orientation and assessment. Required Qualifications:Eligibility to work in Canada (e.g. Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and individuals with open work permits). English Language Proficiency. As a requirement for licensure by the CPSA, applicants must have taken the Academic version of International English Language Testing System (IELTS), achieving a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the components. Test results must be certified (notarized) by a Notary Public or any other government authorized entity. Exemptions are granted based on guidelines set out on the CPSA website (http://www.cpsa.ca/language-proficiency/). Medical Degree. Applicants must be a graduate of a medical school located outside of Canada and the USA, listed in the Foundation of Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) – International Medical Directory (IMD). Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME). As a requirement for licensure by the CPSA, applicants must have completed at least one full year of hands-on training (outside of Canada and the USA) after having completed their undergraduate medical training, no exceptions. Specialty training must show evidence of being hands on and supervised for it to meet this requirement.
Additional Required Qualifications:Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part I (MCCQE1). Applicants must have passed the MCCQE1 prior to application. Hold registration for supervised practice with the CPSA under the Limited Practice Registry. Candidates must submit a Curriculum Vitae and Clinical Assistant Eligibility Pre-Screen Letter from AHS with their application. Incomplete applications will not be considered. The successful applicant will be responsible for registering and maintaining professional licensure with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). Clinical Assistants must meet certain licensure requirements, therefore AHS provides a pre-screening process to help ensure interested individuals satisfy the minimum requirements to be eligible for registration by the CPSA. Within the last three years, physicians need to have practised independently, been in a regulated, supervised practice (in a role where the physician was not the most responsible physician), or been a part of a continuous postgraduate training program for a minimum of one year in the discipline you want to enter in Alberta. Fellowship training, community service, public service, national service, Medical Officer posts and practice experience do not fulfil this requirement.
Preferred Qualifications:It is anticipated this will be a highly competitive job posting.
