Study leave is granted in accordance with the national Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales).Continuation of an applicant’s existing research, involvement in current departmental research and development of new projects will be strongly encouraged.Subject to the provisions of the Terms and Conditions of Service to observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust.To observe local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures, and to comply with Regional and Trust Health and Safety policies.Main duties of the jobThe main daytime clinical work will comprise of the theatre sessions – both accompanied and solo and with responsibility for patients. This might be in the elective theatres or in emergency or trauma theatre. Trainees have appropriate direct or indirect supervision by the consultants.A placement on the intensive care unit for 3 to 6 months could be expected.The candidate would be given an opportunity to consolidate the skills in obstetric anaesthesiaOn call: There are full shift rotas (EWTD compliant) for Emergency Theatre (1 in 7), ICU (1 in 6) and Obstetrics (I in 8) integrating Anaesthetic trainees, clinical fellows and Speciality Doctors on the same tier rotas. You will be expected to rotate between them all, although you may be predominantly on one.Although this position does not carry Postgraduate Dean’s approval for training recognition, it offers full teaching and training opportunities. The successful candidate will be allocated a named educational supervisor to oversee their development and career and offer support in the annual Trust appraisalAbout usThe Anaesthetics Department is an integral part of the Division of Medicine, Diagnostics and Clinical Support and Division of Surgery and Women’s & Children’s Services whose responsibilities cover the provision of Anaesthetic Services, High Dependency and Intensive Care, Pain Relief and Palliative care, as well as the running of Operating Theatres, Recovery and CSSD. In addition the hospital has an extra contractual Hyperbaric Chamber.There is an active teaching/research programme within the department and there are links with the University of East Anglia. There is an excellent purpose built training and education centre on site at the James Paget University Hospital along with a newly refurbished library and learning area.Job description

Education and Qualifications
Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • Minimum of 2 years experience

Desirable

  • Primary FRCA or equivalent
  • ALS, APLS, ATLS, PROMPT or equivalent experience

Experience & Knowledge
Essential

  • Minimum of three years Anaesthetic experience at Core Specialty Training level or above, or equivalent.
  • Emergency, epidural and spinal anaesthesia
  • Experience in Obstetric Anaesthesia & IACOA (or equivalent)
  • Ability to work without direct supervision
  • Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within the specialty.
  • Ability to prioritise work effectively
  • Evidence of appropriate experience and knowledge to the level of the Primary FRCA and/or evidence of CME/CPD from the preceding three years (including appraisal and teaching).
  • Experience in invasive monitoring
  • Willing to participate in hospital transfers
  • Experience in Critical Care Medicine
  • Willingness to extend knowledge by continued education

Desirable

  • Experience of committee work/project management

  • Experience of conducting clinical audit
  • Willingness of using evidence base to support decision making
  • Familiar with the principles of Risk Management
