Description of Work Unit Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate and post-doctoral students.

This work unit exists to produce requested laboratory data on blood and body fluids in a timely and efficient manner to support research, and to guide clinicians, referring veterinarians and students in diagnosis and treatment of varied and numerous species.

Position Summary This position exists to support the Clinical Pathology Laboratory by receiving, verifying, charging, preparing, storing and distributing samples for testing; by organizing and disseminating laboratory results by verbal reporting, photocopying, filing, and telephoning and/or faxing reports; by keeping records for the purpose of cost accounting for the clinical pathology laboratory. This position will have primary responsibility for scanning of cytology preparations into a digital image database for evaluation by the pathologist and file and storage maintenance. Sample handling may include spinning tubes containing blood or other body fluids (possibly infectious) and transferring plasma or serum to another tube. Clinical Pathology is an essential services unit and will be open on CSU closure days (inclement weather, holidays, etc) – ability to work on these days is required.

Required Job Qualifications
  • High School Diploma (or GED)
  • One year of experience in a veterinary medicine or other laboratory environment with experience handling biological materials or diagnostic samples.
  • One year of experience with digital data management software.
  • College-level coursework in Biological Sciences and/or a related field will substitute for the one year of required experience if a transcript documenting that course work is attached at the time of application.

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Demonstrated use of medical terminology.
  • Demonstrated experience with LIS data systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in database or digital image handling.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or certificate in phlebotomy.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in computer sciences.
  • Background knowledge or work experience in laboratory/veterinary testing environment including knowledge of equipment, tools, and systems.
  • Demonstrated clear and concise communication skills and attention to detail as evidenced from applicant’s written materials.

  • Maintain digital image database system and suggest improvements to database structure and integration with LIS.

  • Verifying the receipt of quality specimens. This includes ensuring correct labeling, paperwork, sample type, sample quality, and sample quantity upon receipt.
  • Separate samples by centrifugation and distribute blood, body fluids, urine, and other samples to appropriate laboratory sections.
  • Observe appropriate sample handling precautions to avoid the spread of infectious agents within samples.
  • Ensure proper handling and priority of tasks. It is typical for this position to handle greater than 100 samples in each shift as well as simultaneously perform other duties such as answering phones and answering questions from rDVMs, clinicians, and students.

  • Ensure each submitted sample is labeled appropriately and matches paperwork submitted regarding sample ID and test(s) requested.
  • Expedite sample testing and processing by charging and labeling submissions in accordance with the department guidelines and laboratory SOPs.
  • Monitor for and report on any improper submissions or inappropriate labeling of tests and or samples.
  • Complete internal Incident Reports when pre-analytical mistakes occur, as well as educate the submitter on the mistake made and how to correct it in the future.
