The incumbent will work in collaboration with the Senior Director of Office of the Indigenous Relations (OIR), the Communications Specialist, Indigenous Relations will be part of a new permanent team located within the Office of Indigenous Relations (OIR). They will work directly with the larger OIR team to provide communications support and writing support for the Office of Indigenous Relations (OIR) against the implementation and action of the Indigenous Peoples Framework (IPF) Strategy, which delivers on the Canadian Red Cross commitment to reconciliation, cultural safety, community-based service delivery, and collaboration with Indigenous leadership.
In this role, you will:
Responsibility 1: Communications:
- Provides advice and support on communications initiatives related to the IPF Strategy.
- Supports the development and execution of external and internal communications plans to support the OIR’s strategic direction & priorities to further the positive reputation of the Society.
- Oversees the production of communications products and publications (e.g., brochures, guides, presentations, videos, speeches).
- Writes and edits communications materials as required.
- Acts as liaison with employees supporting communications relating to the OIR.
- Maintains awareness of best practices for communicating in a way that is respectful of Indigenous peoples, and provides guidance as requested.
- Monitors communications relating to the Office of Indigenous Relations e-mail.
- Monitors National communications related to Indigenous Peoples.
Responsibility 2: Writing education and learning content as needed for the Office of Indigenous Relations
- Acts as the communications lead on the development of interactive virtual resources on the historical and ongoing harms of colonization; this includes guiding the writing team on structure and language, as well as editing and writing digital content.
- Acts as the communications lead on the development of resources for Walking the Prevention Pathway, a community mobilization process for wellness.
- Supports the Reconciliation Advisor on the writing of a Reconciliation Action Plan for CRC departments to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, the Calls to Justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
- Supports monitoring and reporting on actions to realize the IPF Strategy.
- Acts as the communications lead on updates to the IPF Strategy and other high-level plans.
- Support the drafting of research and education briefings, learning documents.
- Identify project risks, develop mitigation strategies, and communicate quickly and appropriately.
What we are looking for:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution.
- Minimum of five years working in community engagement projects with initiatives involving multiple stakeholder groups and in relationship with Indigenous audiences / communities.
- Experience in strategic communications, research, writing and editing, and design.
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment adapting effectively to change.
- Experience working both independently and, in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
- Ability to adapt to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of stakeholders and to build relationships across diverse groups.
- Strong English written and oral communication skills; fluency in French is an asset.
- Strong organizational and planning skills
- Communications – strong verbal and written communication skills with confidence to interact with volunteers, staff and senior leaders.
- Understanding of the contemporary diversity and history of Indigenous peoples across Canada.
- Understanding of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, the Calls to Justice from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and UNDRIP, as well as human rights safeguards and protection frameworks for Indigenous communities and peoples.
- Knowledge of the IPF and the CRC commitment to reconciliation, cultural safety, community-based service delivery, and collaboration with Indigenous leadership.
- Understanding of allyship, the principle of “do no harm,” nation-to-nation relationships, Indigenous worldviews, and Indigenous determinants of health.
- Knowledge of current editorial principles and guidelines for communicating in a way that is respectful of Indigenous peoples.
Working conditions:
- The majority of the work is performed in a remote environment.
- Occasionally required to work non-traditional hours to meet travel and other commitments and during times of a disaster response.
- This may include long to moderate hours sitting and using computers and office equipment.
- Ability to work in stressful and often ambiguous conditions.
- This position will require infrequent domestic travel for workshops and meetings as required.
