ABOUT SDSNThe UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) has been operating since 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. SDSN mobilizes global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical solutions for sustainable development, including the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement. We aim to accelerate joint learning and promote integrated approaches that address the interconnected economic, social, and environmental challenges confronting the world.SDSN works closely with United Nations agencies, multilateral financing institutions, the private sector, and civil society. It is directed by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs and operates through offices in New York, Paris, and Kuala Lumpur.POSITION SUMMARYReporting to the Head of Communications and External Relations, the Communications Manager provides critical support and leadership to the Communications Team, helping to enhance SDSN’s overall brand and reputation, increase the visibility and impact of SDSN’s activities, research, network, and members among target audiences, and execute high-level public events around key multi-lateral events, including the International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD), the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), the UN General Assembly, and the Conference of the Parties (COP).With regard to specific communications activities, this includes supporting the implementation of SDSN’s overarching communications strategy, as well as collaborating with SDSN’s teams and partners on the co-creation of communications strategies for joint work. Key aspects of this role include managing the development and implementation of SDSN’s digital communications, such as newsletters; designing and developing strategic brand assets; helping to maintain website content and overseeing SDSN’s digital metrics and analytics; producing targeted communications strategies and campaigns for SDSN programs, including developing promotional kits and drafting blogs, press releases, and written outputs; supporting the production of a range of digital, social media, and video content; and working with the Head of Communications and External Relations to secure media coverage and place op-eds in key outlets.For events, duties include supporting the SDSN team and partners in coordinating event logistics for ICSD, meetings of the Leadership Council, the launch of the World Happiness Report, various project and program meetings, publication launches, and workshops. This includes assisting with program/agenda development, identifying and contacting a wide range of national and international speakers, incorporating multi-media technology, coordinating with venues, service providers, and vendors, and providing on-site assistance to colleagues.PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIESCommunications (65%)

  • Producing targeted communication strategies and campaigns for SDSN’s programs, events, and publication launches, including working with external partners to coordinate and align efforts.
  • Leading SDSN’s newsletter development and implementation, including supporting SDSN’s digital marketing strategy.
  • Working closely with the Head of Communications and External Relations to improve SDSN’s internal communications, including overseeing SDSN’s new employee spotlight campaign.
  • Supporting the Head of Communications and External Relations in improving SDSN’s Google Ads strategy.
  • Drafting and copy-editing blogs, press releases, and other written outputs from SDSN Secretariat teams, experts, and partners.
  • Supporting the production of a range of digital, social media, and video content to amplify SDSN’s events, launches, and programs, including posting and scheduling content across platforms and developing promotional kits for timely initiatives, launches, and publications.
  • Working with the Head of Communications and External Relations to identify potential new channels and partners for SDSN’s programs engagement.
  • Supporting the Head of Communications and External Relations on media relations and outreach efforts, helping to place original thought pieces/op-eds and news pieces in targeted media outlets to reach key audiences and amplify awareness of SDSN’s research and programs.
  • Helping to design and update SDSN’s brand assets and guides for staff and other digital promotional materials, as necessary.
  • Helping to maintain SDSN’s website content and growth, including supporting the strategy and development of new website features in collaboration with SDSN’s Senior Web Developer.
  • Compiling communications-related metrics and analytics and working closely with the Head of Communications and External Relations to use these to adjust strategy as needed.

Events (30%)

  • Working with the Head of Communications and External Relations on the planning, logistics, and coordination of ICSD, including coordination with speakers, venue, and promotional materials and outreach.
  • Enhancing SDSN’s internal communications strategy by maintaining internal event calendars and approvals.
  • Supporting the Head of Communications and External Relations and New York office management to coordinate SDSN’s event and outreach strategy during key moments, including the High-Level Political Forum, the UN General Assembly, and the Conference of the Parties.

General Administrative Support (5%)

  • Submitting communications and events-related purchase requisition requests.
  • Aiding in updating SDSN’s databases of contacts (via Mail Chimp and Airtable.)
  • Providing A/V support and onsite logistics as needed, including at joint project events.
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities, as deemed appropriate by the Head of Communications and External Relations.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Three to five years of relevant work experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Excellent communications, presentation, and writing skills, strong project management skills, and a collaborative, team-oriented approach.
  • Proficient use of social media channels, including Facebook, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn, and social media management tools (Publer, Buffer, etc).
  • Experience with digital content creation tools (Adobe InDesign, Canva etc.), online meeting software (Zoom, Teams, etc), and email management software (Mailchimp)
  • Experience managing logistics for events and a track record of working collaboratively with diverse partners.
  • Experience and/or interest in sustainable development preferred.
  • Fluent in English (oral and written) is required.
