Conservation Technician IIThe full-time Conservation Technician will be part of the Great Lakes/Atlantic Regional Team of Ducks Unlimited, Inc (DU). This position will support conservation delivery efforts across the Great Lakes/Atlantic Region and will be remotely located position (home office). The Technician will work across a number of conservation delivery spaces, providing technical and programmatic support in the delivery of DU’s mission. The Technician will be part of a highly motivated team of biologists, engineers, lands, GIS Technicians, and other professionals working with state and local agencies, private landowners, and agricultural partners to identify and advance voluntary and long-term conservation restoration and protection opportunities.QualificationsThis is an entry level position that will support private and public land conservation efforts as well as other habitat conservation activities. Five years of experience is desired, but not required, with minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a conservation-related field such as biology, environmental science, GIS, or natural resource management, or in a real property related field such as business, land use planning, real estate, or agricultural economics. Experience with legal/transactional experience in real estate and an understanding of property law, land protection funding resources, and land trust alliance standards and practices are desirable. The ideal candidate will have a good working knowledge of conservation programs and agricultural systems, experience working one-on-one with private landowners to provide conservation planning assistance, and the ability to work well with diverse teams including DU staff, conservation partners, landowners, and production agriculture producers. This position requires frequent work outside, possibly in inclement weather, and may require physical exertion or lifting as needed. Candidate must be able and willing to travel as needed, including some overnight travel.Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as interpersonal skills are required. Proven grant writing, project management and administrative skills are desired, and experience with successfully managing land protection programs with public and private partners, and private landowners. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented task manager and out of the box thinker with a good working knowledge of regional conservation issues, and experience working with private landowners in rural communities.Responsibilities:As a member of DU’s Great Lakes/Atlantic Team, the Technician will provide programmatic support to projects and programs that deliver conservation technical assistance and voluntary conservation programs (with a specific focus on regenerative agriculture) to producers, and private landowners within their state priority areas and beyond as appropriate. In addition to supporting the delivery of conservation technical assistance within their assigned area, staff may also provide technical support and planning to the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and other state, federal, and Non-Government Organization (NGO) partners as deemed appropriate.The selected candidate will work in a joint capacity with other DU teammates, as well as state and federal partners to promote and accelerate enrollment for the regenerative ag program, as well as DU’s wetland mission. Activities will include partner coordination, grant development and support, accomplishment report development, GIS support, budget management.Required and Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Other Responsibilities: * Knowledge of local, state, and federal conservation programs and policies (especially USDA Farm Bill) used to protect and restore wetlands and grasslands in agriculturally dominated landscapes is preferred.

  • Working knowledge of Farm Bill programs such as the Environment Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) and Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) also preferred.
  • Ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize work activities and complete tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Support the development, oversight, and stewardships of grants and agreements that support the delivery of DU’s conservation mission. Specific emphasis will be placed on experience with funding sources such as NAWCA, Farm Bill, and NFWF.
  • Work with development (fundraising) staff to obtain funding assistance for conservation delivery opportunities. Assist fundraising staff, as needed, in identifying and stewarding potential major donors to support programmatic delivery and cultivation.
  • Providing forward thinking and vision toward growing sustainable lands program that integrates water quality, agricultural, climate resiliency, carbon sequestration, and ecosystem service objectives and applies a diversity of land protection tools and resource opportunities.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal conservation programs and policies used to protect and restore wetlands and grasslands in agriculturally dominated landscapes is preferred.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive fleet vehicles or personal vehicle for federal mileage reimbursement rate.

This position will report to the Great Lakes/Atlantic Manager of Agriculture Programs with additional collaboration with the Directors of Conservation Programs and Agriculture.Salary: Commensurate with experience & education.
