Position Description
As a critical member of the Project Management Office, the successful candidate for this position will be responsible for evaluating bid specifications and drawings, conducting material take-offs and ensuring that we know everything required to successfully bid and win the project. Construction Estimators must aggressively follow-up with subcontractors to ensure that bids are received and work with the Project Manager to follow-up on bids and budgets to close the business.
The successful candidate will have a broad range of responsibilities, including but not limited to, the following tasks:
Bid Administration
- Solicit and maintain communication with subcontractors and vendors
- Prepare subcontractor bid packages
- Transmit addenda and other bid information to subcontractors
- Show creativity and resourcefulness to gain better pricing from subcontractors
- Perform a comprehensive “bid day” analysis and scoping of specifics to present to peers in a formal bid review prior to final close.
- Submits bids and budgets by the bid deadline
- Prepare and submit bid revisions to clients as required prior to close
- Enter all relevant information into current corporate templates as a final bid offer to the client in the required format
- Prepare content and assemble soft requirements of offer to be included with the commercial in conjunction with the System Resources Coordinator
- Assist in creating and continually improving corporate bid templates including form of estimate and rate sheets for labour and equipment
Project Knowledge
- Have a thorough understanding of the scope for specific trades assigned
- Develops RFI’s and clarifications to clients for further required knowledge to build offer
- Understands how to fit sub-contractors to the size/scope of subcontract scope of work.
- Include value-engineering ideas
Follow-up & Closing
- Consistently follow up on submitted bids and budgets with Project Manager/Supervisor to close business
- Determine lessons learned from the existing process and feedback from clients, peers and others to compare the efficiencies of the process with the intent of winning jobs and making margins as bid
Project Turnover
- Properly turns over bid documents and subcontractor information to Project Manager in a timely manner with the goal being 100% of awarded projects turned over within 24 hours of notification
- Assist Project Controls with entering successful bid information into the Vista software program
- Review final IFC drawings and contract with Project Manager and highlight areas of concern when comparing to IFC and RFP documents
- Participate in project kick-off meeting with Project Manager to ensure there is an understanding of how the job was bid and therefore how it is to be executed
Subcontractor Award
- Review the schedule with the Project Manager to determine that all subcontractors and material that are required to adhere to the schedule are in place
- Thoroughly compare requirements offered to procurement scope
- Award subs in a timely manner to ensure activities meet schedule and cost baselines
- Ensure that subs are aware of (and commit to) the project schedule
Supplier Management
- Seeks & qualifies new procurement sources
- Actively maintains and manages a list of suppliers, vendors and sub- contractors including prequalification of desired sources
Position Requirements
Skills and Experience:
- Canadian Construction Association Gold Seal Certification in estimating is an asset
- Bid 2 Win or bid software experience and training is an asset
- Experience in estimating bridge construction is an asset
- Post-secondary certificate, diploma or designation in a related field or relevant experience with field work would be an asset
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Project and Access
- Minimum 3-5 years’ experience relating to industrial and/or infrastructure construction
- Considerable knowledge of industry-accepted standards, guidelines, procedures, and practices in regard to estimating, cost control and forecasting
- Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Must be able to manage multiple tasks and have excellent follow up skills both internally and externally
- Ability to influence and negotiate – Demonstrate the ability to interact effectively with levels of the organization, exhibiting diplomacy and tact
- Able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast paced environment and meet tight deadlines
- Is proactive, attentive to detail, action oriented, results driven with excellent follow up skills
- Able to identify problems/issues and generate solutions in accordance with Company policies and programs
- Identify creative ways to develop additional profit opportunities and/ or risk management strategies where possible.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
