We are seeking to recruit a substantive Consultant Anaesthetist to our current department of 25 whole time equivalents. These posts have arisen due to vacancies.This advertisement is for a whole-time consultant role (10.5 PAs). On-call commitment equates to 1:8 which involves covering theatres and level 2 critical care services. This is non-resident on call and attracts a 5% salary uplift in addition to the weekly clinical job plan. The advertised 10.5 PA already includes this allocation. These job plans will include 1.5 of core SPA with up to 1 SPA available on taking on additional roles. One example is that successful applicants could contribute significantly to the current commitment of successfully completing ACSA within the coming two years (Accreditation of Clinical Services in Anaesthesia via the Royal College of Anaesthetists).Within our department are five substantive anaesthetic specialty doctors, who along with rotational Anaesthetists in Training have theatre sessions, pre-operative assessment sessions and cover the resident high dependency rota.There are also five anaesthetic associates working within our department. They work under the supervision of a consultant anaesthetist in line with the current RCOA recommendations in a ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. Twin theatre working is embedded in our rota.Main duties of the jobThe Royal Orthopaedic Hospital offers many and varied procedures which this post can provide anaesthesia for. These include complex arthroplasty including revision surgery, spinal surgery (both degenerative and deformity), musculoskeletal oncology surgery and anaesthesia for interventional radiology. Successful applicants will have an interest in perioperative medicine, anaesthesia for complex orthopaedics and regional anaesthesia.We also have consultants contributing to preoperative assessment, the High Dependency Unit, acute and chronic pain. We are in the process of developing an acute pain service to complement the critical care outreach service already in place.Outside of clinical practice the anaesthetic department is heavily involved in delivering teaching for a perioperative medicine module for Aston University. There is also a strong presence within clinical governance, research and management within the hospital.
