Grade UE09 – Salary Scale: £57,696.00 – £64,914.00 (A revised salary range for this grade is planned to take effect from Spring 2024 of £61,198.00 to £75,498.00).

The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the University’s Health and Safety Department senior leadership team, responsible to the Director of Health and Safety. The Deputy Director, Specialist Safety Advisory Services is a new role with responsibility to shape and deliver the strategy for these services and lead a team of experienced, specialist advisers to deliver their roles.

The Health and Safety Department assist the University to deliver University Strategy 2030 and enable the support of its values, regarding our staff, students, and community. The University is a world leading research-intensive institution, providing a stimulating and interesting working environment for the delivery of this role. The Department’s new senior leadership team deliver our area’s remit through three directorates; which work together to build on and facilitate the delivery of our University’s safety, health and wellbeing management system and deliver continuous improvement. This role leads the directorate that is focused on specialist safety advice including radiation, biological and chemical safety. We are seeking a candidate with management experience, who has both a good understanding of the research environment and relevant health and safety knowledge to bring to the role.

The post will be based at Charles Stewart House, 9-16 Chambers Street, Edinburgh.

Key attributes:

  • Experience of operating at a senior/managerial level in a diverse, complex organisation alongside experience of coaching, motivating, and developing a team of direct reports.
  • Experience of operating in an environment which is higher risk through biological, chemical or radiation work activity and have appropriate experience in providing related advice or management of specialist advisors.
  • Desirable to have Degree level in a science/engineering related discipline, with post-graduate qualification or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Desirable to have NEBOSH Diploma, or equivalent academic qualification. Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

About the Team:

The Information Security Division provides strategic ownership and leadership of the information security posture for the University. The Division helps College and Support Group staff identify and mitigate internal and external threats to IT facilities and business critical information and is responsible for providing advice on strategic current and emerging information security threats. We provide risk based advice to key strategic change activity being undertaken across the University to ensure that required controls are identified, costed and resourced to ensure that the information security risk profile of the University is not adversely impacted.

We own, manage and develop the University’s information security governance framework, including the policies, procedures and control measures needed to ensure that the University’s risk appetite is maintained. Management reporting is driven through the University information governance structure, with the Division being responsible for pan-University information security working groups and oversight of related information security activity.

We work in conjunction with internal departments and external stakeholders to increase user awareness and understanding of the information security threat landscape and help identify appropriate countermeasures. We undertake ongoing reviews of available training and awareness methods to provide effective, engaging and timely learning options.
