The University of Edinburgh’s Information Services Group (ISG) invites applications from undergraduate students who are interested in working over the summer as a Digital Skills AI Intern, to experiment with different Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and processes to understand and document how AI can help learning and development teams in the University of Edinburgh. The successful student will support ISG’s Digital Skills and Training team. who provide a range of development opportunities for staff and students, including the Digital Skills Programme, and the Developing Your Data Skills Programme.
The key purpose of this role is to explore and experiment with different AI tools and processes to create better learning solutions, streamline processes and enhance the overall learning experience for staff and students. You will gain practical experience in working with different AI tools, making suggestions on integrating these tools and practices into the Digital Skills and Training team’s operations, and reporting and presenting findings. This creates an exciting opportunity for you to develop a range of transferable skills including research and report writing, and presentation and communication.
The pay for this internship is UE03 £12.04 per hour, plus £2.18 per hour holiday pay, and is expected to start on the 3rd of June 2024, lasting 12 weeks. You will likely work between 20 to 35 hours per week for the duration of the internship, between Monday to Friday (9am – 5pm). You will be paid a month in arrears during this internship, meaning your first payment date covering hours worked in June will be the 26th of July 2024. We anticipate this internship will have a hybrid working pattern, where you will work mostly from Argyle House and from home, depending on your preference.
Duties and responsibilities
- Conducting research on the different ways of how AI can support learning and development teams in operating more efficiently
- Investigating available tools and their suitability for enhancing the Digital Skills and Training team’s operations in terms of automation, data analysis, personalised learning, administration, innovation, etc
- Proposing and trialling practical, ethical and actionable solutions based on findings
- Preparing a detailed report that communicates key findings, with action points and recommendations for further application of proposed solutions.
Skills and experience
Essential Criteria
- A current University of Edinburgh undergraduate student (you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). Internships are open to all undergraduate students, except those in their final year of study
- Based in the UK for the duration of the internship, and able to commit to working on-campus in Edinburgh as and when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications)
- Proven ability to use AI as a tool to improve training
- Demonstrable enthusiasm for Artificial Intelligence and curiosity for exploring its applications in the workplace
- Proven ability to conduct desk research, and propose and trial potential solutions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to report on findings clearly and concisely.

Location
Hybrid Working Pattern to be agreed with line manager. Working both from home, and on-campus in Argyle House.
