Job Summary Bowdoin College is located in Brunswick Maine with a student population of almost 2000. We make everything from scratch and are consistently rated in the top 10 for college dining! We have our own butcher shop, bakeshop, and organic garden that all supply food to our 2 dining halls and 3 retail locations.
Under supervision of the Head Chef, Assistant Chef, and Cold Food Production Coordinator in Moulton Union, the Production Assistant is responsible for the following:

  • Preparing and serving food items in dining halls
  • Work independently and in a team setting within the cold food production area.
  • Assist with set up, service, and clean-up of food serving line
  • Follow appropriate food handling and storage procedures
  • Serve food in serving line while adhering to portion control and serving procedures
  • Monitor and record refrigerator or freezer temperature readings
  • Adhere to safety and sanitation guidelines, including related documentation
  • Provide support and leadership to meet the goals of the cold food production area and may operate computerized board checking system and perform other cash transactions.
  • Provide occasional coverage at checking station by greeting dining service patrons, verifying student ID #s/board participation for specific meals

Pay rate: $19.00/per hour +$500 sign-on bonus (½ paid at first check, and ½ paid after 90 days of eligibility requirements are met).

Education/Skills Requirements Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Preferred:

  • Previous Culinary coursework or certification
Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents Required:

  • Three years of institutional food service experience .
  • Demonstrated understanding of food preparation in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred:

  • ServSafe Certification (Dining employees will be provided training within their first six months to become certified).
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the requirements of the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy.
  • Prior experience with food preparation techniques and their application in institutional settings.
Standard Work Days and Hours
  • Scheduled hours are –
    • Days off on Monday and Tuesday
    • Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (12:30 pm – 8:30 pm)
    • Saturday and Sunday (7:30 am – 3:30 pm)
  • The role will be required to work occasional overtime, holidays, and during weather emergencies, in addition to working major college events and weekends (i.e., Parent’s Weekend, Commencement, and Reunions).
  • This is a full-time, academic year position working 40 hours/week for 38 weeks between the months of August and May (0.73 FTE).
  • An academic-year employee is not scheduled to work during winter, spring, and summer breaks.
