DivisionCorporateJob DescriptionDollar Tree, Inc. is seeking a collaborative, results-driven individual to join the Sustainability team and provide subject matter expertise to drive the company’s environmental sustainability strategy with a focus on climate action, product and packaging stewardship and reporting.
The director of environmental sustainability is accountable for key components of the company’s sustainability strategy, including overseeing and supporting implementation of our decarbonization plan, managing GHG emissions reporting and driving regulatory compliance for packaging and product stewardship.We are looking for someone who is knowledgeable and passionate about environmental sustainability issues. The candidate is a strong individual contributor, effective communicator and skilled manager with proven sustainability experience and a capacity to influence others and work across functions and teams to advance Dollar Tree’s capabilities and reputation regarding sustainability.Climate action
- Coordinate the implementation of our short and long term decarbonization plans to support our 2032 SBTi-aligned targets and 2050 Net Zero commitment ensuring collaboration and integration with relevant teams
- Develop and lead cross-functional climate action working group to drive scalable and repeatable processes to assess, plan and guide teams on initiative updates, target tracking and future emissions reduction and decarbonization levers
- Partner with merchants, supply chain, procurement and sourcing teams to engage with key suppliers on their environmental sustainability needs – particularly regarding climate disclosure, and science-based emissions target-setting, reductions and renewable energy transitions
- Analyze merchant supplier data by category and geography to develop strategies to support DT/FD key suppliers in setting scope 1 and 2 targets and reducing GHG emissions
- Drive implementation (and continuously enhance) supplier engagement plan including
- Supplier decarbonization playbook
- Internal and supplier resources and training
- Measurement of supplier engagement efforts to drive continuous improvement and future priorities
- Communication with relevant teams as well as develop processes to integrate objectives and requirements into vendor agreements, product development and other sourcing requirements
Product and packaging stewardship
- Partner with relevant teams to monitor, interpret and build capacity for current and upcoming packaging and product stewardship regulatory requirements and reporting
- Manage data collection and management of packaging data to support state-specific EPR reporting obligations
- Support development of sustainable packaging strategy to anticipate regulatory headwinds, operational efficiencies and environmental/climate impact
- Help oversee development of a chemical management program including
- Creating chemical management baseline
- Assessing supplier engagement and policy/ regulatory compliance
- Determining opportunities for policy enhancement and expansion of priority chemical list
- Improving data collection and use of systems/software (eg UL PurView )to improve supplier management and disclosure
- Leveraging frameworks from Chemical Footprint Project and Retailer Report Card to determine 1-3 year plan
Data, reporting & disclosure
- Lead process for calculating and reporting company’s Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions according to GHG Protocol and SBTi; perform analysis of company’s physical and transition climate-related risks
- Ensure readiness for SEC and California climate-related reporting requirements and other forthcoming mandatory sustainability/climate reporting and disclosure
- Partner with Financial Reporting to establish and maintain data collection verification methods, internal controls, etc.
- Manage submissions and updates of voluntary disclosures across multiple frameworks and rating agencies including (e.g., CDP, GRI, SASB, TCFD, MSCI, ISS, EcoVadis and Sustainalytics)
- Identify continuous improvement opportunities with raters, rankers and scorecards; perform annual benchmarking
- Monitor and drive efficiencies in the data management process, starting from data collection to data qualification to report progress against our commitments, both internally and externally
- Support development and advancement of annual corporate sustainability report
- Oversee implementation of data/content, design, and final deliverables
- Work with internal teams to ensure proactive management of sustainability reporting requirements and ongoing stakeholder engagement
- Drive improvements to annual sustainability reporting process as needed
Overall program development
- Actively participate in industry associations and forums to assess future trends and developments in the marketplace to support Dollar Tree’s current and future environmental sustainability initiatives
- Conduct research and peer benchmarking and engage with external partners to learn best practices in the industry and share with relevant internal stakeholders
Qualifications and skills
Required
- Bachelors Degree in Environmental Management, Sustainability, Data Science, Finance or other related field required
- Knowledge of and passion for general sustainability topics, standards, policies, and leading practices
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience in corporate sustainability, finance, energy management and/or related field with at least 4 years in sustainability data collection and management; data verification and disclosure, corporate GHG emissions reporting experience applying GHG inventory and accounting protocols
- Technical knowledge of solutions to decarbonize Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions (e.g. energy efficiency, renewable energy, low/no-carbon fuels and refrigerants, low carbon materials).
- Knowledge of supply chain management concepts in sourcing, contracting, environmental management plans, supplier risk management, materials traceability programs
- Understanding, experience and technical knowledge of sustainability reporting frameworks, ranking systems, disclosures, and certifications including ISS, MSCI, Sustainalytics, EcoVadis, SASB, TCFD, CDP, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and JUST Capital
- High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and data management programs
- Ability to lead through influence across company functions in a collaborative manner to implement the reporting strategy and deliver on reporting and disclosures requirements
- Skilled project manager who pays exceptional attention to details and timelines and successfully executes long-term projects; ability to strategically multi-task while also being clear and focused on execution
- Superior interpersonal skills; highly collaborative; strong team player who builds and maintains strong relationships/credibility
- Flexible, entrepreneurial spirit with experience influencing across an organization with indirect authority
- Excellent verbal and written communication, especially of difficult concepts, as well as editing and presentation development
Preferred
- MBA/Master’s degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science/Management, Business, or other related job field preferred
- Experience working in or closely with finance, accounting or SEC Reporting functions desirable
- Experience engaging suppliers directly in reducing Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
- Knowledge of retail and product sustainability desirable
