Position Details

General Statement The 4-H Center for Youth Development at MSU provides ongoing support to the 4-H program and serves as a statewide resource to families, communities, and youth serving organizations by providing expertise on positive youth development, program development and volunteer development. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide visionary leadership and establish strategic direction for the 4-H Center for Youth Development and Montana 4-H programs that reach diverse youth across the state.
  • Perform administrative functions for the 4-H center and programs including management of the budget and supervision of the faculty and staff at the 4-H Center for Youth Development
  • Serve on the MSU Extension administrative leadership team.
  • Serve as spokesperson for MSU Extension 4-H youth programs and the efforts of the 4-H Center including representing Montana 4-H at the state, regional, national and international levels.
  • Provide leadership for planning, developing, implementing and evaluating 4-H Youth Development educational programs by involving departments, faculty, county agents, volunteer adults and youth as partners.
  • Facilitate and deliver a comprehensive professional development plan for faculty with 4-H appointments including orientation, onboarding, and continuous professional development.
  • Establish a collaborative relationship with the Board of Directors of the 4-H Foundation and supervise the Executive Director of the 4-H Foundation, serve as a trustee and member of the Executive Committee
  • Engage in scholarship, creative activity, and grantsmanship to support youth development in county, reservation and statewide 4-H Youth Development programs and professionals.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships and collaborations with campus departments and other pertinent state and private institutions and organizations to develop interdisciplinary programs that will address youth needs.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Earned doctoral degree from an accredited university.
  • Experience in providing leadership to a 4-H youth development program or other youth development program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of positive youth development scholarship, research, and practice.
  • Demonstrated experience in program planning, implementation, evaluation, and communication of impact.
  • Successful experience in resource management and in procuring and managing grants.
  • Possess an academic record of scholarly accomplishments that will merit appointment as a faculty member.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Academic degree in education, youth development or closely related field.
  • Successful experience in administrative leadership and supervision of personnel.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, innovative delivery methods and use of technology.
  • Knowledge and/or experience collaborating with indigenous populations.
  • The Successful Candidate Will Possess excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to contribute in a team environment; the ability to manage multiple and complex tasks with attention to detail; the ability and willingness to work a varying schedule that will include evenings and occasional weekends as needed. The candidate must have the ability to travel on an occasional basis and possess the ability to represent MSU Extension and the Montana 4-H Youth Development Center and its programs to others in a professional, courteous and competent manner. The successful candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with constituencies at the university, county, state and national levels; a familiarity with multi-cultural and a variety of socioeconomic audiences; an interest in working with people from diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to the principles of diversity; an understanding of the land grant university mission; and an appreciation for economically and ethnically diverse rural and urban populations. The successful candidate will also possess an understanding of the youth program development domain of the 4-H Professional Research and Knowledge Base and Related Competencies.
    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information Giving presentations to groups, travel throughout the state and occasionally throughout the country.

    The Department The 4-H Center for Youth Development at MSU provides ongoing support to the 4-H program and serves as a statewide resource to families, communities, and youth serving organizations by providing expertise on positive youth development, program development and volunteer development.
    Montana 4-H, the youth development program of MSU Extension, reaches nearly 20,000 Montana kids ages six through 18 with hands-on learning.
    Four-H clubs, camps, school enrichment programs and special interest activities immerse kids in challenging and rewarding experiences that teach them valuable life skills like leadership, citizenship and decision-making.
