The Role

The Director of Business Operations will be part of the European leadership team, reporting into the Managing Director, Europe. The focus of this position is to help reach operational excellence in the EMEA region acting as a trusted advisor for the MD, Deputy MD and European Leadership team. The European leadership team is focused, dynamic and cross-functional: a small group of leaders with responsibility for driving profitable growth across the region.

The Team

Conde Nast has been through a process of global transformation , designed to unify operations across our international markets and portfolio of market-leading brands. As part of this transformation, the five European markets – UK, France, Spain, Italy and Germany – have been integrated into a coordinated regional entity: Conde Nast Europe. Recently the Middle East has become part of the EMEA region amplifying the scope of the MD and European leadership team.

The European team, under the leadership of the Managing Director, Europe, includes representation from Revenue, Finance, People, Video, Audience Growth and Legal. They also work closely with Editorial Leaders, Editorial Support Functions (such as Creative, Operations) and Product & Technology teams – based across the European region as well as in our global HQ in New York

We are now at the stage where our five markets are already working together, but there is a significant opportunity to become more effective as a European organisation, identify & drive new growth initiatives, improve collaboration across the European markets to maximise the opportunities from globalisation and further embed Conde Nast’s best-in-class reputation as a leading force in the media industry.

What will you be doing?

As a strategic self-starter, you’ll partner closely with our European MD/DeputyMD, to help drive strategic business planning and operational delivery while building and maintaining key relationships across the organisation.

A complementary partner to our European MD/Deputy MD, serving as a key communicator, innovator, process driver, driving operational excellence within the European Region.

Help operationalise the strategy maximising efficiency through extensive process and workflow analysis across the 5 European markets. This includes assisting the MD, DMD and European Leadership team to set goals based on the global KPI’s, identify improvement areas and develop plans to increase efficiency.

Support and help implement strategic initiatives which make a meaningful impact to the European business, working with the MD, DMD and European leadership team to substantiate and implement; recent examples include:

Provide support to assess new projects and brand launches: analysis of the revenue opportunity, opportunity & risk analysis, etc followed by recommendations to MD, Deputy MD and leadership team.

Lead the development of exec-level reporting, ensuring we accurately reflect the progress of the European business – championing successes and highlighting risks. This includes dashboard, budgets, schedules, executive decks and reports when required.

Manage strategic cross-functional projects when required interacting with different functions and teams across the organisation and reporting back to the MD and Deputy MD. In some cases this will involve detailed project management and reporting.

Lead the collection of data and devise new ways to review and assess performance across the range of KPIs which contribute to the success and growth of the EMEA business.

Support governance meetings from an operational perspective building the necessary tools and dashboards to guarantee the maximum efficiency and the best possible outcome. Optimising existing working rhythms:

Guide quarterly planning/strategy sessions

Develop templates and processes to streamline and provide focus

Establish a system that keeps the functional leadership team organised and enables communication with key players.

Support our regular financial forecasting process led by Finance to ensure we fully reflect the reality of our business requirements/priorities helping gather information and inputs from the functions and making recommendations.

Bring to bear best practices from comparator orgs both within and outside media & publishing to ensure we continue to learn and develop as an organisation

Focus in supporting the MD, DMD and Commercial leaders to evolve our commercial transformation helping analyse existing workflows and processes, building reports and making recommendations.

Who you are:

A background in consulting, banking, in-house strategy/transformation roles/digital transformation – or some combination thereof – would be desirable. Some commercial understanding (including revenue modelling) would be advisable.

MBA desirable but not essential

Exceptional numeracy, financial analytics, commercial awareness, written & presentational comms, project management skills and attention to detail – all essential

Understanding of the media space is essential – prior experience in specific areas would also be beneficial (e.g. publishing, subscription-based business models, growing digital audiences etc)

Understanding of & affinity for the brands in our portfolio and the industry verticals in which our brands operate

The successful candidate will be able to build strong relationships with a range of different leaders from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences

Exhibiting emotional intelligence, judgement, discretion and political acumen – diplomatically anticipating problems, averting them and adding value to the vision

Proven capabilities in skillfully managing projects with organisation and discipline, showing attention to detail and with focused follow-up to ensure results. Overssing full project lifecycle from identifying & scoping, through operationalization and guiding them to successful completion

Above all, we are looking for a candidate who can demonstrate humility, empathy and good humour, but also one who can get things done in a complex matrix organisation

Previous experience in managing commercial transformation projects will be valued.
